i am very interested in computers, which is why none of my computers work

@acdw That's what bookmarks are for ...

for saving cool websites so you never look at them and end up with massive list of bookmarks.

@postroutine excellent editor? I don't know, there are very slick vim setups out there, there is kakoune nowadays.

Emacs is more about running everything inside it (compiler, debugger, interpreter, shell, dired ... for starters). You really can't explain that as an editor thing.

I want to gather data off my existing PCs onto the hard drive of the laptop I just got. I could buy an external hard drive to copy it all onto, then copy to the new laptop. But surely there's some way to do this over the net, ideally on the local network? To avoid the extra purchase and double copying. I've had success doing this with SyncThing in the past, but the last time I tried it didn't seem to be working. I'll try again, but any other suggestions?

@kensanata @oppen by and large, they donate their code and their design and their time. Some people may use that, and have different ideas on how it should work. They, instead of forking it and implementing it, ask the donors to do it for them. Which of these are acting entitled again?

I have no love for boorish maintainers (e.g. on Emacs IRC - I don't know what a representative equivalent is nowadays). But I can't fault the thinking behind it.

@vortex_egg is this pertinent beyond who gets credited for discoveries? You know, a variant of "history is the opinion of the victorious"? Or is there selectivity in which knowledge gets stored and which doesn't?

Accusing critics of "free trade agreements" of xenophobia is tired and lazy, as is the claim that they are necessary to bring skilled labour into Aotearoa, when it's well established that progressive immigration policy can be crafted to achieve the same thing. Outsourcing service jobs to overseas companies risks starving out our local capacity to perform or afford them. Just look at what "free trade' has done to local manufacturing and food prices.

We really need to invent a separate web at this point, right?

"This is an HTML email, please update your email client to view."

No! Please update your email generation system to send plain text email. Putting aside the risks of opening HTML in email apps, where browser security isn't protecting users from the most common HTML-based attacks, HTML email is the digital equivalent of packaging products in 3 layers of plastic when 1 layer of cardboard would do. It's a waste of bandwidth and energy.

Frankly I'm surprised that pressing F12 while running a web browser isn't illegal by now

@VictorVenema I take that back. On reading more about Web annotations, it sounds bigger than ActivityPub was.

And with descriptive Resources not having to be URI's, you could annotate anything by describing it using its checksum! Commenting on photos, yes. But also, commenting on Git commit hunks!

And an offline-first version could somewhat replace Zotero?

hypothes.is isn't a lock-in either; I could, hypothetically, get @strypey 's annotations on anything directly from his "feed".

FEDIBLOCK NOW

@vandys @thegibson Unfortunately not, at least not from what I can see. Won't stop intolerant lefties from blocking it tho, a lotta the #Fediblock crowd blocks #Gab no knowing that they defederated and are never coming back to the #Fediverse lol

I'm not really much of a musician in any sense but I just want to point out that people dont realize how even to reach a basic level in most instruments is a monumental task, particularly string instruments. It can take days or weeks just to make a single half decent note out of the thing. The number of man hours it takes of investment to actually play enjoyable music on any level is astounding. Musicians deserve a lot of respect no matter where they are in their journey, just saying.

@mrb got it. Now that you said it, I too want that " kernel".

The justification for shipping and enabling by default might be existing written content out there that predates packages and doesn't mention how to install the packages written about.

Why not use a copy of the directory but with all files replaced with symlinks to /dev/null? It could achieve your purpose to have a "kernel", and some simple elisp hooks might suffice to really load package Elisp code.

@zleap @freemo nobody comes out of prisons reformed. they're just storage facilities where people end up getting psychologically broken, probably injured and improperly healed, institutionalized, then abandoned back to society in worse shape than they started.

it's about as moronic and having people memorize answers for 10 years and then calling them smart.

@VictorVenema does it federate? Can sites other than hypothes.is running compatible/identical software participate? I guess that is what would bring it to the fediverse, whether the federation is ActivityPub or something else.

@strypey

@mrb I thought you didn't want the packages that come with Emacs? Those clones don't.

Blasphemy: try kakoune, which takes the vi model further and implements it in a contemporary user-friendly way, plus it tries to work well with external programs rather than implement external functionality in an extension language.

@realcaseyrollins compiling Erlang worked? Only the Erlang doc generation hung the machine? Weird, because linking the C code for language implementations is what could use all the RAM and hang.

Do the older versions of Erlang work? The latest has started to use LLVM internally, which has the reputation of being a beast. Maybe turn it off in the latest release, it might be called native compilation or something.
