@dnkrupinski Never underestimate the impact of capital on a system that has inherent economies of scale and network effects. It happened with the web. No reason why it can’t happen with the fediverse unless we’re all diligent in resisting it from the very start.

Biology Professor Paul Knoepfler on Mastodon:

“Some servers seem to function much better than others. Certain servers also have more problems. It seems that many servers require applying to be in them, which seems weird to me.”

I don't mean to be rude Paul, but these are just realities that corporations have burnt millions of dollars hiding from you. So they can domesticate you, farm you for data, and sell you to advertisers. If that's ok, go on back to Melon Husk.

@godpod "Dump Musk for the Tusk."

I love that, I really do.

@jarom this +1000 . And why not call it real world instead of offline world? Lets hope they have anchors in the real world and not in tge digital.
@strypey

I don’t really have any idea, but if I was to advocate anything, it might include features that augment their offline world, that focus on creating vs. consuming and strengthen community values, character and mental health. @strypey

@matslats@social.coop maybe it means humans are out of last chances? And are going to take the planet down with them?

@ntnsndr unless there is a global question to be decided on, you don't need global-scale play democracy, only local-scale. Aren't there good models for that in local governments or small states like ?

Personally, I believe there is nothing global except capitalism and nuclear war. Everything else is a local issue with non-local impacts. Doing something locally can have positive results. Doing something from outside will involve capitalism or nuclear war, likely with negative intent.

@billstclair @EndlessMason @strypey e-mail storage might be quite efficient nowadays - everybody is on GMail and Google surely must be de-duplicating by design. So, the main inefficiency has to be in the transmission to the client ... which happens on Google's web page. GMail has solved the HTML e-mail overhead problem 😎

@billstclair I had read about that micropayments idea. The cellphone companies basically had it - per-second or per-minute calling plans or per-SMS charging.

And people did instead go more for higher-priced unlimited calling plans or bundled minutes or bundled SMS'es. E-mail hasn't had that tried, even as a thought exercise, has it? A free tier with 30 e-mails per month + paid tiers. It has kept SMS spam humanly manageable.

re: Down with HTML email

@strypey @alienghic you don't need to send HTML if clients can render Markdown (or, better, asciidoc). The problem isn't formatted text, it is the HTML tag soup.

@EndlessMason You, as a consumer would not trust paid email more than unpaid, but if spammers, who send millions of emails, and expect a very small return rate, had to pay, there would likely be fewer of them, or it might stop being lucrative at all.

@strypey We as yet have no micropayment architecture wired into the net. Maybe building one is too much effort, but it would buy a lot (pun intended).

Playing football in thick fog against a team of clowns. Luckily, I can see the funny side.

@strypey I haven't had to try Mobilizon which has more modern UI, are its profiles as difficult to use as Hubzilla's options?

Another question regarding the Fediverse: "Would politicians, press, higher learning, celebrities actually ever be bothered to self-host an instance and pay someone to maintain it?"

Again, Automattic answers that question.

What do all those institutions use for their websites? Self-hosted WordPress sites.

Who runs it? Someone they pay.

Self-hosting and maintenance can not only be normalized -- people would probably be happy to do it.

Why do I compare Automattic to Big Social? Because Automattic:

1. Builds social media products
2. Has achieved significant market share
3. Makes money

Whenever people ask me about a potential model for the Fediverse, I point to Automattic.

They're no flash in the pan. They've existed for ~20 years.

@strypey (and ?) have separate profiles, one for each purpose and hence circle. Hubzilla/Streams can now also combine instances to make 1 community. And they are interoperable with fediverse (like Bonfire does).

fediverse meta - press coverage

@strypey does editing in an app (probably just a webview) help in any way? There is Padland on .

Those looking for a more bounded social network experience than what's offered by Mastodon and another existing fediverse software, might be interested in the work being done by the #Bonfire project:

@freemo Thanks for thinking it through. I'm regularly gladdened that I stumbled into this server instead of another.
