@JoshuaACasey Agreed, especially when the system makes it so easy for individuals to block. You onnly need to block servers not people and you address mostly all bad actors.. so a dozen or two blocks and an individual is good. There is no NEED for a master block list forced upon them because the block lists are so manageable.

Moreover users can just import the blocklist as a CSV, so it literally takes a few seconds.

@freemo that's another reason why I like this instance. Instances should not be responsible for blocking. Individual USERS should be responsible for blocking stuff that they don't want to see.

@juergen_hubert
Finally, somebody who isn't emotive but also speaks to the issue.

I don't think the Mastodon network started as a "white" space. More a techie place, fairly positive the time I have been on it. Has had the advantage of privilege, sure.

It isn't surprising that topics related to lack of privilege might have upset some ... lets say, insensitive ... moderators. It is best to get away from their instance! Are there no genuine alternative imstances? At all?

@mergerson

@tetrislife @camerondotca @albinanigans @mergerson Because every place here is _not_ equal?

Mastodon started out as an overwhelmingly white space, and this is still an apt description. Structural racism _will_ flourish in such a space, even with good intentions - and "good intentions" shouldn't be assumed.

@AuntieAlias well, I am not white and I don't live in the West. But I do see historically disadvantaged demographics, and I keep hoping they don't tilt the much-more-level online playing field against themselves by making it a mirror, when it can be a lever. But it becomes and remains an outrage-fest, sadly.

People do claim Pleroma can run on "$2½ Vultr instances".

@mergerson

@albinanigans
Such high standards for discourse. I gasp ... and am no longer interested in such a situation if you are in it.

Assuming for a minute that this is not an outrage account, why does an issue being emotive for you mean that I have to abandon logic?

@mergerson

@camerondotca
You aren't addressing the point. Having a separate server ensures you can throw inimical elements out, block inimical accounts and inatances. At no cost. Why wouldn't you want that control?

What do you get by throwing racism in the face of inimical accounts (which is what posting public posts means)? Unlisted posts do get to accounts that follow you, hopefully it doesn't include people who need CW for such posts.

@albinanigans @mergerson

@matslats@social.coop this was well-written. I doubt that the petty egos that abound will allow many to correct themselves.

@camerondotca
> it is feeling pretty familiar
Probably because people are involved? All sorts of people out there, platform doesn't make a difference.

I am actually with the "make your own instance" idea. Unlike the real world, all places here are equal. And being on a specific server doesn't reveal any more about you than a cursory look at your messages wouldn't.

And why throw racism in every white's face? Post unlisted posts rather than public - no need to CW.

@albinanigans @mergerson

@mergerson no single instance on fedi moderates the same way, i think there's easily a community here anyone would get banned from, for every community they would be welcomed on

> @journalist@publishingCompany.com
Some journalists acquire a reputation independent of their employer. Some are employed by more than 1 organization. Self-hosting seems worth the effort, assuming they have a backup discipline. They would get a blog etc. along with it if running Epicyon for example.

> Now, would we make that decision a month from now? I don’t know. I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to get into specifics, but we’ve had some tricky edge cases. Inherently, it’s tricky.

... and now you've replicated the problem you identified with Titter. Fortunately, there are other instances specifically for journalists so verification gatekeeping role isn't as centralized as it was there. But the best solution is for journalists to be @journalist@PublishingComp.any, not to have them all on one server.

> ... there are lists of servers that are known bad actors, and you can easily block them... So those servers now have no access to our server, they can’t post, and they can’t read us.

I hope someone has let these folks know that you can silence servers to prevent harassment, without stopping them from seeing your journalism. Among the many complex reason these folks gets so twisted is they get stuck in echo chambers of other twisted people saying twisted stuff, until it seems true and normal.

The fact that FreeNode runs on free code software didn't prevent or mitigate the hostile takeover:

Like the Great Fire of Titter, The Great Freenode Robbery is good example of the reason not to trust your communications to walled gardens (online services centralized under the control of one entity). Something to think about for people still using and promoting Signal...

@driusan great! Seriously, hodge podge of scripts and C is the Plan9 way, isn't it?

I made my #plan9 / #9front based #ActivityPub repo public. It's still very much a work in progress and it's mostly just a hodgepodge of undocumented scripts and C but if anyone's interested in helping push it along it's at github.com/driusan/fedi9.git

Right now it can:
Client:
- get (public) outboxes and cache them in ndb db
- import following list and do same
- serve them over 9p

Server:
- handle webfinger requests
- cache incoming inbox posts
- validate httpsigs

✅ All links on Mastodon count as 23 characters, no matter how long they really are

URLs can be as long as you want, they will never exceed 23 characters of your limit.

There is no need to use a link shortener!

@MikeSyposs@fosstodon.org no harm trying it out, looks like? I mean, you have everything at hand, and servers like or epicyon.net run light ( runs without a database server).

Not first-hand experience, but in a recent thread, @Graycot mentioned the "only addition to a static webpage needed to source ActivityPub comments" fosstodon.org/@Graycot/1092776
