> The $4 (regular renewal price) per year for a low-cost domain

... at which registrars? I've been paying much more than that for my domains.

But the price is not really the point. Imagine having to pay each year to renew other forms of ID, like birth certificate, passport, or driver's license. Would anyone accept this?

@atomicpoet @rysiek @kichae @Susan_Larson_TN

@shimriez where does a user have to go to learn about its quirks? I have a clear question but having to ask it on would hurt my feelings for Hubzilla 😁

"We have a progressive tax system in New Zealand, where the highest earners pay the most tax."

#StuartSmith, National MP, Kaikōura

i.stuff.co.nz/national/politic

As the recent IRD report makes very clear, the highest earners pay the least tax as a proportion of their total income. It's shocking that an MP can publish this kind of blatant lie without consequences, and get it distributed by one of our major news publishers.

@Reiddragon @ezio @ksk Names being for locations/places and not values is a pretty fundamental aspect of dynamic languages, although #Python unlike #Smalltalk & #Lisp doesn't reify those as first-class values like Symbols.

Once name != specific value, attaching types to anything but the values themselves doesn't make sense.

Type as part of value can also benefit from hardware acceleration in tagged-memory architectures (which are unfortunately rare now).

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews I think maybe banning them would be justified because we came here to get away from corporate data collection

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews back around 2016 Meta then Facebook, which collects all our data whether on or off the site, let Cambridge Analytica have our data. I was swept up via a friend. I didn’t like the FSB having my data. If #Meta federated, it would try to collect our data. As I mainly played a game there, didn’t discuss politics and blocked ads, game over, left. As many #Trumpers so I would block, don’t trust Zuckerberg.

@vyr
> if I wanted Meta to ...
Generations of published news, blogs, (e-mails?), code, all have been swallowed up to create "AI". Public fediverse posts can be swallowed up too for advertising, nothing can be done about it (even if you host your fediverse instance yourself).

> Mastodon appears to be moving ahead and don't care what I think or what it will do to the fediverse

This is an observation I've seen all too often. From where I'm sitting, it's always been the case since the number of Mastodon servers overtook that of GNU social servers, and shows no sign of changing :/

There was some lively discussion on the socialhub and I thought we were making progress, but now I'm not so sure. Talks have broken down. Mastodon appears to be moving ahead and don't care what I think or what it will do to the fediverse. We already have comment permissions and don't even need FEP-5624. If that document is played as is, we will no longer be able to federate with Mastodon - full stop. The fediverse will slow to a crawl and server costs will skyrocket because network traffic will triple - just to continue federating the exact same number of messages.

Classic EEE.

"This is Smaug, the dragon from The Hobbit. Smaug famously stole a mountain full of gold. So full that he sleeps buried under gold. We're talking literal tons and tons of gold by weight.

Forbes ranks Smaug as the second wealthiest fictional character. He had been first, but the price of gold took a tumble and now his vast, overwhelming fortune is only worth an estimated $51,400,000,000.00, or $51.4 billion.

That means that EVEN THOUGH he has an ENTIRE MOUNTAIN full of almost nothing but solid gold, Smaug would rank as the FIFTEENTH wealthiest American.

Fourteen Americans have more money than a gold- hoarding dragon.

Please consider that next time you say deca- billionaires deserve their wealth and shouldn't pay their employees living wages. "

Why should I integrate my blog with the fediverse?

@kev
I was blogging for years on CoActive, a bespoke WP instance where people needed an account to comment. I got none, but the occasional rebuttal from a PR person working for a startup I'd been critical of.

When I joined the fediverse, the first thing I used it for was posting links to new blog pieces. Suddenly I got was getting comments about info I was sharing.

When I set up a new blog, it will definitely be integrated with the fediverse.

@volkris
Understanding the nitty-gritty of the tech is necessary to understand the privacy status. Most users don't get into all that. I was a little taken aback when I realized that Hubzilla/Streams/Nomad servers (had to) keep the private key of accounts in order to function.

Anything hosted can be considered not private (except E2E, but not in many applications - not even e-mail as you said elsewhere). Self-hosted Tor service, equivalent P2P, is all there is?
@mariusor

@nobodyinperson there is a app-in-chat option, maybe some sample app fits this purpose? webxdc.org currently only implemented in .

@tetrislife

Well, is very much focused on instances, not users, and it focuses on broadcasting content farther, not carefully tailoring where content goes.

I imagine this is a case of ActivityPub being intent on getting that DM to the recipient instance (not user) and letting the recipient instance deal with the rest of the picture.

Things similar to privacy aren't priorities in ActivityPub.

@volkris not surprising, maybe the protocol handshake involves knowing just the sending server, not the sending account?

Um - surely mortality risk for all living things is an entirely IRREDUCIBLE 100%?

Involving myself in the sweat and infarction inducing horror of British Airways’ horrifically terrible mobile app has made we wonder why there is no equivalent of the #razzies for apps? My suggestion would be for an annual #Crappies Awards ceremony. Worst design. Worst UX. Greediest In-App Purchase Demands. Most Endless Ad-Loop (I’m looking at you, CandyCrush) Most Pointless Function. I’m sure between us, Mastopeeps, we can think of 10 or 15 categories.
