@tetrislife I think what the Social Coding folks want to see is many guilds forming, so together they can form what the Microsolidarity folks call Crowds (mutual benefit networks made up of Congregations, each made up of a number of small Crews). The theory is these could serve the same purpose as the Foundations. But in a more horizontal and widely distributed way. More resilient.

@mariyadelano

This is a part of the mess of mixing up personal (privacy) and public news/media that the #dotcons did for ten years. We have reproduced this mess on the #fedivers without composting.

We already have a solution for this #fedivers is public, encrypted chat applications are private #KISS

The problem is we have unthinking people trying to do the #dotcons mess of mixing these up. This is all to common crap behaver.

News need to be #4opens and in public #OMN #OGB #indymediaback

@strypey you boosted

on social coding's ideas.

Everything the OP says is accomplished by + spi-inc.org without the social overheads their proposal has.

The most useful point was probably about the number of "me-too" projects that abound in . The most irritating for me way back was Sather. Focusing on formats/protocols is useful, and the approach soounds better for that than FOSS.

Many folks have been taught about “The Tragedy of The Commons” in school. But what most folks don’t know is that it was complete bunk written by a white nationalist and eugenicist to justify colonization and genocide.

memex.craphound.com/2019/10/01

Commons can be successful. Many long-standing and successful commons exist. Many were studied by Nobel Prize-winning Political Scientist Elinor Ostram, who codified 8 principles for how commons can be governed sustainably and equitably in a community.

I’d really like for folks to stop using the term “tragedy of the commons” that assumes inevitable failure, and start calling them what they are. Commons with improper governance or “Failed commons”.

Who might create the Chrome of the fediverse? Maybe Meta this time? Can Mastodon do better at defending the free ports of the fediverse than Mozilla has done at defending the open web?

> I have almost all smartphone notifications off, so maybe that helps

It amazes me whenever I remember not everybody does this.

@screwtape

@teleclimber Yeah, that's a good one too. Especially because our apps are signed with a key only the app author has, the process of switching to a new author taking over an abandoned app is a *process*, one the platform itself has to support. Whereas moving to a fork should just be doable so people can fork apps they use and move the data over without a manual process.

The other topic that interests me is when unrelated apps have the same schema anyways.

@strypey
some good observations by the writer there. In hindsight, it seems obvious for somebody like him, who blogs, to not miss micro-blogging.

But I am in @screwtape 's camp, I have virtual-only contacts whose musings (and ShowerThoughts 🙂) I like going through on and off, and its only due to micro-blogging. I have almost all smartphone notifications off, so maybe that helps.

The #Sandstorm project is excited to finally join the fediverse!

We're a secure computing platform for one-click deployment of open source web apps. We're also an innovative way of building apps based on object capabilities (#ocaps)!

We've selected floss.social because we love the vibe of the community growing here. Our friends at @forgejo are also here which is a great bonus.

When John Mastodon removed server choice from the onboarding process in the official #Mastodon app, he was only kicking the can of user confusion down the road. What happens when Alice asks Bob "what's your Mastodon address", and Bob replies "@Bob_is_here" and Alice asks "OK, but on which server"? Bob may have no idea a choice of servers exists, because he never consciously chose one. How might he feel when he realizes he had a choice, but the simplified onboading took it away from him?

UX/FOSS/mildly rant

When an open source software is hard to use, a frequent response is that there is just a "lack of resources" to make it easy to use.

However, a lot games and software created by single creators in their spare time have a decent user interface.

It is more likely that the user interface has been an afterthought – and will continue to be one, even with more resources being avaliable.

PSA, if someone asks you for contact info (e.g. a phone number) of someone you know, the correct response is "I can't give that to you, but I can give them yours".

It's efficient and adds no round-trips, it's privacy friendly, it's non-awkward and it's social engineering resistant. It's a universally good rule.

And the corollary, of course: Don't ask someone for another person's contact info - ask them to pass on yours.

Tech speakers, it's 2023. Stop using moms as your example of a non-technical audience. It's wrong, its not funny, and whatever you were saying, now most of your audience is not thinking about it.

Just use the exec team as an example instead and get on with your life.

@volkris
> uses more resources though
Why would an instance of a RDBMS-less lightweight like Epicyon (or a not-as-light microblog.pub) have the same resource usage as that of a RDBMS-backed Mastodon?

It is an interesting query @strypey has, on the numeric factors of this ratio.

I'd add that network load might also be different enough to merit attention.

@whynothugo
That seems a valid question.

If Forgefed isn't going to only/also be a "usable" UI for combining patches, how would it be an improvement over e-mailing patches?
@idlestate

@randomgeek languages don't die. I added features to a COBOL program last year. For pay.

@mike

Ah, @youronlyone - There we have it Yuki, from the Man himself that created #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #Streams, #Red_Matrix, #Zap, and #ZOT (and so much more)!

Thanks Mike! Not just for that tidbit, but all the remarkable things you've done for us!

Kindest regards,

Jay Graber in a nutshell:

We don't compete with Mastodon. We're so awesome that Mastodon isn't even competition.

Besides, #Mastodon with #ActivityPub isn't the benchmark. #Bluesky only believes it is because that's all they seem to know. Let them try to do better than #Zot which has featured account portability on every level they could possibly imagine since 2011.
