Interesting test of character: If someone makes a mess (e.g. by accidentally dropping something) – will they clean it up or walk away?

The latter happens due to laziness but also due to feeling embarrassed (you’d have to ask for cleaning material etc.). It’s incredible how ubiquitous shame is in people – e.g. I have heard of people who are embarrassed to buy toilet paper in a supermarket.

I'd say if someone does that and doesn't genuinely at least tries to tidy up / clean up, they're rude and/or selfish.

Even at restaurants or shops one should at least offer to help. It's very likely that staff won't let you do it yourself, if only because they'll be faster and more efficient, and that's fine. Definitely in all other circumstances one should clean up after oneself.
