Now the likes of #MarkZuckerberg and #MarcAndreessen are contributing to making #MMA and #UFC even “cooler”:
> _“I was […] asked whether I consider Mark and #Elon to be role models to children in their embrace of #fighting, and I said, enthusiastically, yes. And I further recommended to the audience that they **have their children trained in MMA**, as my wife and I are. **#Kids as young as eight and maybe even younger** are totally capable of learning both the striking and grappling dimensions of the sport.”_
Sure, let's have an eight-year-old practicing a “sport” for which the ultimate display of prowess is being able to instantly kill another person by kicking their face. You can try to sweeten and disguise the discipline as much as you want: anyone training will know what exactly is at the apex, who are the best MMA fighters, and what it is that they do when they compete.
> _“MMA training is likely **the best path for widespread gains in physical #fitness**, particularly for **#children**.”_
Seriously? The _best_ path? Better than weight training, indoor rowing, tennis or basketball? Better than running, swimming or cycling — or the combination of the three? Andreessen is eager to point out that “MMA is the original combat sport” and that “it was introduced to the actual Greek Olympic Games in 648 BC”. Well, how about _running_? That is “the original sport”, and has an even longer history!

Is that change due to environmental concerns, or to personal circumstances? Just curious.
How do you feel about the restrictions that'll impose on you, making travel much more tiring and time-consuming or even sometimes impossible?
> _“The correlation between income and #wellbeing […] is weak, even if statistically robust. […] The difference between the medians of #happiness at household incomes of $15,000 and $250,000 is about five points on a 100-point scale. The flattening and accelerating patterns are even smaller modulations of a small effect. […] The effect of an approximately fourfold difference in #income is about equal to the effect of being a caregiver, twice as large as the effect of being married, about equal to the effect of a weekend, and less than a third as large as the effect of a headache.”_
How many flights have you _not_ taken in the last years out of concern for #ClimateChange?
My intuition is that for the vast majority of us the answer is: zero 😞
That's true for me, at least. (The last time I used a plane was almost five years ago, but in my case it's just because I had no business trips or holidays overseas while my kids were very little.)
Air #travel is one of the things I find most difficult to say no to for environmental reasons 😢
@tripu You describe many aspects of my behaviour as well, being rather introvert. In the end, when adding up all the good and bad events the sum is probably similar to that of more impulsive and extrovert people. But the curve is much smoother. I appreciate that.
Yeah, I attribute this difference to different ways of behaving. I tend to be better organised than most people I know: in my routines, in my personal space, in my chores, etc. You could even say I have a mild case of OCD, I guess. While that prevents me from doing some great and fun things and make the most of serendipity and improvisation, I gain a lot of stability and quality of life.
Also, I rarely go out until late, I rarely drink in any meaningful way, and I am not confrontational or violent. That, too.
More impulsive people and those who are all over the place seem to have lots of pleasant surprises and do exciting things. But often luck goes the other way for them, too.
All in all, I think I'm OK as I am. It just suits my personality.
Very much recommended material!

Sometimes I realise that people I know — _things_ happen to them. Things happen to people. To me, rarely anything happens. And I feel bad or weird.
Then I reflect on the kinds of things that happen to other people, and most often it's that they inadvertently flushed their expensive engagement ring down the toilet, got into a brawl at a bar and so later had to face trail, realised they had a pair of dirty briefs sticking out at the end of their trouser leg in the middle of a very important meeting with clients, didn't pay a very expensive medical bill in a certain US state thus banning themselves from ever setting foot on that state again for life, very narrowly escaped death from asphyxiation due to a malfunctioning boiler, forgot to engage the parking brake on a slope and found their car a few metres down the road, resumed their road trip after having stopped at a gas station and realised they had been going for an hour with one family member less (all real anecdotes from friends, acquaintances and relatives)…
…and then I think it's probably OK that things don't happen to me. Perhaps I'm better that way, after all 😃
Nice, thank you! I think I didn't know of that one.
I actually registered on three or four #Goodreads alternatives a while ago. Never actually used any of them after that though, since they're always worse than the original, and their communities and book DBs are still tiny in comparison (obviously) 😟
If I do switch at some point, I'll be more cautious this time and look at things like: open formats and protocols, data import and export, free software, who's behind, monetisation model, etc.
What is the next online service or community that you love and have been using intensively for a good while, that will be unceremoniously acquired, discontinued, maimed, or shut down, causing you to lose a good deal of value and pleasure, even if you manage to export data to some useless format?
Mine is #Goodreads possibly 😞
@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven I see. Shouldn't we worry about missing important security patches or features? Has your fork diverged so much that upstream can't be reconciled with it any more? I trust your admin decisions, just asking because if that's the case it sounds like you'll have increasing tech debt or maintenance overhead as time passes…
