Anyone here have experience with Matrix? Want to move the family off of WhatsApp and host my own Synapse instance. Pros? Cons? Caveats?
@badlogic It's not the most efficient protocol and consequently power draw is a bit higher than alternatives, but probably not enough to make a difference.
A self-hosted server can be rigged to not federate, though last I checked it took some doing. Privacy-wise I was most excited for the Matrix p2p project.

@badlogic Re: "Moving family to chat protocol": For additional input: We went with SimpleX Chat when I got tired of waiting for Matrix p2p.
I only use Matrix for work and public servers (ala IRC).
Prior to these two options I used Keybase for both, but the stall & uncertainty after the Zoom purchase prompted migration and insistence on open protocol & infrastructure.
