if part of the value of research and experimentation is to further human knowledge and wisdom, and our understanding of the universe, the AI-powered approach to solving open problems reminds me of my kids memorizing answers to their high school science tests: you may know the answer, but if you don’t know *why* it’s the answer, having that knowledge is of no value because you can’t build on it later. #maths #mathematics

We build on knowledge without knowing *why* all the time. Heck, so much of our exploration these days is focused on going back to fill in the why even though we've already built a tremendous amount upon the what.

If nothing else consider basically everything built on quatum mechanics, which is quite a lot for modern society!

A lot of folks seem to treat knowledge almost as if it's witchcraft, as if there's something supernatural attaching to it. This bit of information is only good if it has the right intention or story or incantation behind it.
