This is the single biggest thing I'm going to miss about not having quote tweets on Mastodon: building threads like this was such an amazing curation mechanism for tying together brilliant content from a wide range of different sources
If you haven't seen the movie yet I could not recommend it higher - they beat Pixar for best animated feature that year, which is no small achievement
I think it raised the bar for the entire animation industry
@JamesGosling Welcome from Calgary, AB!
You might have seen somebody using the proverb Vox Populi, Vox Dei. What was missing was the context in which it was used:
Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit.
In case you do not speak Latin, it means in English:
And those people should not be listened to who keep saying the voice of the people is the voice of God since the riotousness of the crowd is always very close to madness.
Is anyone integrating mastodon with a mostly-static blog that normally publishes over RSS? I'm imagining something that:
1. Allows a blog to be followed directly from a fediverse account;
2. Uses something lightweight to handle activitypub queues, maybe a serverless node process;
3. Allows occasional polling of that queue to update the comments section of the blog post with mastodon replies/comments.
Does this exist? Is it totally infeasible for some reason I'm not immediately seeing?
Alberta politics: Fired AHS board member condemns Premier for "false, conspiratorial and unfounded claims"
Premier Danielle Smith recently fired the entire Alberta Health Services board.
Today, one of the fired board members released this scathing letter about what he described as the premier's "toxic rhetoric," "unhinged pronouncements," and "false, conspiratorial and unfounded claims" surrounding COVID-19.
It's a remarkable read.
@rasterweb @th I'm not on Ventura yet either. For me this has been going on across multiple versions of macOS.
@rasterweb @th I get this all the time on macOS and every time it happens it makes me want to quit using it!
I wonder whether any of the #Firefox developers are aware how I feel every time they push the "Restart to Keep Using Firefox" message in my face while in the middle of working?! I want to support browser diversity but it's difficult to continue using a product that shows so little respect for their users.
I can understand if this were for a serious 0-day vulnerability or something but this is for every single update!

"Do you love Me?" Alice asked.
"No, I don't love you!" replied the White Rabbit.
Alice frowned and clasped her hands together as she did whenever she felt hurt.
"See?" replied the White Rabbit. "Now you're going to start asking yourself what makes you so imperfect and what did you do wrong so that I can't love you at least a little.
You know, that's why I can't love you. You will not always be loved Alice, there will be days when others will be tired and bored with life, will have their heads in the clouds, and will hurt you.
Because people are like that, they somehow always end up hurting each other's feelings, whether through carelessness, misunderstanding, or conflicts with themselves.
If you don't love yourself, at least a little, if you don't create an armor of self-love and happiness around your heart, the feeble annoyances caused by others will become lethal and will destroy you.
The first time I saw you I made a pact with myself: 'I will avoid loving you until you learn to love yourself.' "
~Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Our industry really should get better at being more well-balanced and do validation when exploring.

I'm convinced that one of the biggest architectural mistakes of the past decade was going full microservice
On a spectrum of monolith to microservices, I suggest the following:
Monolith > apps > services > microservices
So, some thoughts

So, @nipafx asked us to do a #java toot. Since I like #codespaces and are interested in using it for #java workshops, I wonder if any of you are nowadays comfortable in using #vscode for #java development.
(I know that in theory you can use #codespaces with #jetbrains #gateway as well, in practice it does not yet work for me)

One of the things that I think is sad about the decimation of Twitter eng is that Twitter was doing a lot of interesting (and high ROI) eng work that, at younger companies, is mostly outsourced at great cost.
A few examples off the top of my head:
The now gutted HWENG group was so good at designing low power servers that, in a meeting with Intel folks, discussing reference designs vs. what Twitter was doing, the Intel folks couldn't believe the power envelope Twitter achieved.

In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.
Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond.
His reply was a doozy.
