According to the article the information wasn't leaked due to a breach, as such but the info is available via their Api so it was scraped.
What safeguards are in place here with regard to this not happening here on the fediverse ?
Other than the fact that there are millions of us here, (I think) spread over 100s of instances, so our data more spread out.

The only private data an instance has is your email address and password. (If you're not using a VPN there will be an IP address too.)
If you want to have maximum security in case of a leak, you could use a throwaway email address, unique password and VPN connection. In that case there wouldn't (as far as I know) be anything sensitive to leak?
By the way, there are thousands of instances on the Fediverse 😁
