If NFTs have any value it's in making a mockery of the concept of ownership.

I am trying to make sense of what NFTs are

forbes.com/advisor/investing/n

suggests it is way to own digital assets,

If I take a photo I own it anyway surely only it seems this is a way to digitally like that photo to me, to prove ownership, this is done digitally.

Other than that,I am guessing there are ways to stop someone just copying that digital asset and removing the digital signature.

@travis @Noelle808

So if I have copyright / ownership of what I create, what is the advantage of an NFT, other than it just sounds like technobabble.

I can sell a digital image normally anyway. This has happened for years, you can buy music as mp3 format pay - download.

@zleap @Noelle808 its just art collecting basically. Rich people buy paintings, they are "assets". It is an image you can prove you have ownership of, but let's say you have some famous painting there can still be 100s of prints you can buy and put on the wall, but you have the original and you could sell the original for a shit load. I dont have a desire to own an not but thats the idea.

@zleap
It's not. The word digital ownership in context of NFTs is just marketing bullshit. It just confuses the issue. Don't think about it in terms of ownership, because you don't own something.

Think about it as paying someone ridiculous amounts of money to put your name next to a copy of an image in their privately managed list.

Btw you can always pay another guy to put another persons name next to the a copy of thw same image in yet another list. That's what NFTs are.
@Noelle808

@zleap @Noelle808
Best case the digital artist gets a cut from one of the guys with the list and signs a contract of exclusivity. E.g. He wont offer and upload his art on another list.

Still does not prevent that art from being on another list. Legally this is a contract cardhouse imho.

Basically it's yet another crypto trading (read "gambling") and digital money investing (read "scam for greedy people") platform with art on top.

it seems this is a way to digitally like that photo to me, to prove ownership, this is done digitally

Reddit gold, now with blockchain.

@clacke @Noelle808 why can't i create a digital signature and then use steganography to insert in to the image file.

@clacke @Noelle808

I a not that technical on this but I know stenography allows text to be hidden in photos for example so is this a way to help identify a photo.

Or some sort of digital signature

Just an idea it seems NFT may not be for everyone but there has to be alternatives

@zleap @Noelle808 The idea of an NFT is that you have a single source of truth and transactions and then you have a social convention that makes a record in that ledger mean something.

It's like the social convention that if you have a paper registered at the property office you have the right to your house, with the difference that nobody cares because anyone can make up an NFT and claim that it means something.

@clacke @Noelle808

What happens if that single source vanishes or something happens to the so they can no longer carry on with their work or they decide to charge $1000 for their sservices

If some collective in some place agrees that here's an NFT that allots who does the dishes every day and everyone follows and enforces that, then that NFT is meaningful.

But why would they do that when a non-global, non-cryptographic ledger in whiteboard markers on the fridge is cheaper and easier to use? Either way they still need to trust and enforce that people follow the rules.
