We can give them a chance, If we don't like what they post we can at l east block the while thing from our accounts or at instance level.
Problem is the media will end up reporting that this IS mastodon and end up damaging the reputation of everyone here based on their reading one or two posts on one instance.
We had better be ready to fight back and tell people to get their facts right.
@PinhasLavon @Suzu @abloo @dashie @piggo @zleap Well, most normies, unless you want to make that “by definition.” They’ll certainly be told all about this.
Hacker News drones are horrified Trump will have a social media platform again, the reports that it’s a Mastadon instance may be well founded (don’t trust Mr. Mastadon), if so again Trump is horrible at picking people when you’ve got something scalable like BEAM based Pleroma as an alternative.
Although @graf reported poa.st pushed Pleroma to its then existing limits, and I suppose there’s a lot more people who know how to scale Ruby on Rails systems if they have money to burn.
@ThatWouldBeTelling @PinhasLavon @Suzu @abloo @dashie @piggo @zleap read this thread, in specific from my comment downward.
that instance yesterday I do not believe was his, but rather someone else unaffiliated with them
mastodon if very, very poorly designed. for example, they try to be inclusive to iToddlers so they convert media behind the scenes so iPhones etc can view it (in specific webm). In our test in january with 1200 active users (1/4 of mastodon’s flagship instances “”active users”” (poast is very closely reaching half of their monthly active users in daily use alone) any time a webm was posted ffmpeg would begin transcoding. at one point we had a dozen of them posted at once and it locked the server up for entire minutes while it waited to transcode.
for trump to hyperscale something like we have with poast using mastodon it would cost them a fucking fortune just in GPU required to do this simple task, and since he is focusing on iOS users first I can tell this is going to be one of those android-as-a-second-thought type places.
from our personal experience and my experience in rolling out something like this to a major population, Mastodon is the poorest choice he could make. it would cost them less to in-house develop than to hyperscale
We tend to think the same thing about facebook, only there is far more evidence of abuse on facebook, and the fact that facebook is denying, I would like to see what this new whstleblower is going to come up with.
Lets make sure our conversations here are of a postive nature,
The only thing I have heard from 1 person that Wil wheaton (who played Wesley) on Star trek came on Mastodon and was subjected to abuse, that is the only negative from so called normies. So far I have seen little evidence of bullying,
People believe anything they want, if they want to find something that is racist, will go look and find the slightest thing that could be seen or interpreted as racist, because they want to find something to justify their opinions.
We have excellent blocking tools on here.
"Problem is the media will report this is Mastodon and it will tarnish out reputation"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but normies already think the fediverse is a hive of villainous transphobic racist far right scoundrels who, worse of all, use anime avatars.
So I don't think it will change much.
