Liberal Hypocrisy is Fueling American Inequality

youtu.be/hNDgcjVGHIw

@professortom I like the self-examination aspect of this video- acknowledging the disconnect between people who vote for liberal candidates and people who support liberal policies. It's a difference of "sounding good" vs. "doing good". That being said, buying a home is a way for average people to build some wealth and adding multi-family housing into those neighborhoods CAN potentially lower property values- especially rentals.

@pamby1 I agree that multi-family housing can devalue property. But if there’s a housing shortage and no one wants multi-housing built in their backyards, the end result is mass homelessness.

What I thought the video did a good job of pointing out is that those who claim they believe in helping those of lower socio-economic status are not willing to sacrifice even just a little (multi-family won’t drive costs to $0) in order to achieve their stated goal of a more equatable world.

@professortom @pamby1

What this video points out is the naïveté of the video makers. One (amongst many) reason many people vote Republican is because of the very things mentioned in this video. The Democrat party is filled with grifter politicians.

@sigma Repubs aren't innocent either, but I agree with your point. We need MAGA candidates, imo. The rest need to go.

@professortom

@professortom Yes please- at least Desantises. I don't know enough about Walker.🤷‍♀️

@sigma

@pamby1 @sigma Walker was the Republican governor who survived a Democrat-led recall and went on to get re-elected.

He ran for President in 2016, but dropped out early.

From what I saw, he was a principled guy as opposed to most who were on the stage during the primaries.

@professortom @pamby1

I agree with the principled nature of Walker. But since the appearance of Trump, it's apparent we need more 'in your face' politicians.

@sigma I definitely agree with that. I believe the majority of Americans have had a "live and let live" attitude that has not served us well in terms of keeping our country from the situation we're in now. President Trump had the right policy combination to appeal to the majority of Americans- as evidenced by his increase of 11,000,000 voters across ALL demographics- AND the right temperament to fight for it. We got a taste of our potential as a country while PT was in office.

So if he gets back in, will the US reverse the policy on Coal and fossil fuels, and start burning coal again despite pledges and the known effects on global warming of burning coal. ?

@zleap The only thing I will say about "global warming" is that it is a political agenda, just like covid has become, that is ANTI- science and where there is ONE accepted narrative and dissenting arguments about how much of a threat either is, is silenced. Until all arguments are considered about both, I'm ignoring both as a SERIOUS threat.

@sigma @professortom

@pamby1 @zleap @professortom

1) Coal is not going away (even under Dem admins) because it's fueling most power plants and Teslas. Natural gas is clean and usable alternative given the availability.
2) Pam is correct. "Global Warming/Climate Change is a political agenda that Dems are not willing to respect. Just look at Obama's house and Pelosi's new house.
3) We are in a cold historic global temperature period.

@sigma And with your 2nd point we've come full circle. @professortom posted a video about liberal hypocrisy in terms of housing and here we are with liberal hypocrisy about "climate change". Again, policies that "feel good" vs. policies that "do good".

@zleap @professortom

@sigma @pamby1 @professortom

This is the problem that important issues end up as political agendas

There is tech available that allows us to burn coal more cleanly.

We can plant more trees.

As for cars / vehicles that use fossil fuels, effects on climate aside, the effects of breathing in Oxides of Carbon, Nitrogen, Sulfur as well as other chemicals are well known. So surely we need to look alternatives for that reason.

I would much rather see more emphasis on other means of getting around clean.

Oddly we have car charging points, which get their own power from burning fossil fuels

We have the technology for all of this, just not the political will to act.

@sigma @pamby1 @professortom

In some ways I also feel this is being weaponised by people, it is as if older people are causing the issue, we are trying to do the right thing, recycle more etc.

I did write to Lidl UK a while back to ask about them using alternatives to plastic to wrap drinks cans for example.

They do have a plan for this, so to me writing to companies and asking a question, suggesting ideas is far more useful than blocking motorways for example.

People are not going to listen to people like Greta Thunberg if they feel she is just going to attack them for everything they try and do.

@zleap I'm all for doing things "better" and "cleaner". I actually personally believe in keep my footprint clean and small. I recycle, my husband who is an avid hunter and outdoorsman has never used any kind of weed killer or other chemicals in our yard because of the little creek and lake behind our house. I hate clutter so I'm not much of a consumer in general. I LIVE my principles.

@sigma @professortom

⬇️⬇️⬇️

@zleap Maybe those who are passionate about climate change should live what they believe and start pressuring your reps to do so also. People have to be able to afford living and the reality is that some of the climate change policies hurt low income people the most.

@sigma @professortom

@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

This is how things should be, we don't generally need government to tell us how, as a community we can usually help each other do that.

@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

:)

i Don't mind opposing views, as discussion leads to better solutions.

The uk wants people to install heat pumps, very expensive, not sure how they remove heat from the air out side, during the winter when it is sub zero or very cold temperatures.

We have the tech to install solar panels roof tops which can be used to heat water, that to me makes far more sense.

@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

There is probably an issue of disposing of old heat pumps in years to come.

It should be possible to make things so they can be recycled or at least last a long time, then be recycled.

Again this is why we need to push STEM so people can come up with these ideas and solutions.

@zleap Yes, STEM- not bs ideologies like CRT or gender theory. There are only so many hours in the school day- stick with reading, 'riting & 'rithmatic and be nice to everyone while you're doing it.😁 Stop the "social engineering".

@sigma @professortom

@Gamercat @pamby1 @sigma @zleap Does anyone expect mature discourse from someone who's identifying string is "eat a dick"?

@professortom 🤣🤣🤣 Had the same thought but I was willing to hear them out.😁 I'm 54 so I just figured BEANS was some acronym I'm unfamiliar with.🤷‍♀️

@Gamercat @sigma @zleap

@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

Yeah, we need to encourage science, debate and problem solving.

But proper science subjects.

Never know we may be able to grow crystals for solar panels in space in weightless conditions, that are more efficient for example.

@zleap @pamby1 @sigma I always thought STEM was a dog whistle because I don't see how T or E can be standalone. M&S create T&E.

@professortom @pamby1 @sigma

Stem is Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

I agree they are all one set of topics that are interrelated now

@pamby1 @zleap @sigma As I understand it, there are a plethora of problems with solar panels: cost, durability, upkeep, amount of energy that can be used from them. It's a step in the right direction for people who can afford it and live in sunny climates, say, between the two tropics.

@professortom @pamby1 @sigma

Yeah the west could easily help those countries out in that respect.

@zleap
heat pumps do work in cold temperatures, just like the back of your freezer gets hot even if the inside is sub zero.
@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

@zleap but of cause solar panels also make sense. there isn't a one size fits all solution. i don't think that hot water (~60°C) is the optimum for heat pumps. they are very good for floor or wall heating where you need temperatures around 25°C.
@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

@zleap
you get somewhere from 2× - 6× the energy as heat that you put into it. the english wikipedia article is pretty good! actual efficiency of course differs depending if you use the ground as heat source or air and how hot things have to get, eg. floor heating can be rather cold compared to radiators.

@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

@professortom @sigma @pamby1

In some parts of the world, you have little choice due to poor public transport and or distances to get to places.

@zleap @sigma @pamby1 Meaning, it takes **capital** to build infrastructure to reduce emissions?

@professortom @sigma @pamby1

Well if we build good infrastructure more people will use public transport, and it will be cheap, reliable and not get caught up in traffic like it does where I am sometimes.

Result less traffic on the road, = less emissions but more importantly I get to my destination in good time.

@zleap @sigma @pamby1 I don't think public transport is the answer, especially not in the middle of a pandemic. Furthermore, public transit does no good outside of densely populated cities.

I have to drive to get anywhere I want to go. Round trip, I'd say my average drive is ~5 mi–and that's me "not going anywhere".

It's ~15 mi from my place to downtown.

@professortom @sigma @pamby1

Yeah good point, this is why it needs to be better and more integrated, The Torionto transit system seemed really good, but that was circa 2006.

There are trains (via rail) and greyhound for getting from one pkace to another.

Takes 4 days to go from Toronto to Vancouver

@zleap @sigma @pamby1 i’m sure it is. And there’s a time and a place for that. I’m sure I would enjoy that ride.

On the other hand, if I’m trying to visit someone for the holidays or there’s an impending death or I’m delivering your paycheck, four days is an eternity.

@professortom @sigma @pamby1

Well yeah, in my case there was no rush and I was in Canada on a 1 year working / travel visa thingy so i had the time for that trip.

@zleap @sigma @pamby1 No doubt.

But an 8 day round trip without counting the time spent at the other end? Suppose you stayed 4 days.That''s 12 days total or for sure 2 working weeks (5 * 2 = 10)

Not everyone has 2+ weeks of vacation to burn.
