My daughter was raped at 13. Recently the subject of rape came up in two of her classes and from what she said it was handled very poorly.
So she made an appointment with the principle and her guidance councilor and explained to them why it was handled so poorly and how it should have been handled and that staff training was necessary and provided them some options for it. It took two hours. A 4 hour teacher in service day has already been scheduled for the first training module. good for her.

@Phil This is really good news.

Can this story be put on a website / blog somewhere please, along with follow ups as to how the training went and what difference it makes.

I would be happy to share more widely to inspire others to speak out.

Many victims or witnesses feel unable to..

@zleap Well she is a senior in HS so won't be there to observe any impact the training has. One of the teachers was a man and what he said was really stupid. (basically don't fight back and don't resist so you don't get hurt, it will be over quick and you can move on with your life without trauma) When she told me he said that I wanted to rape him with a plunger.

@Phil

Teachers are meant to be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, in many caase their hands seem to be rather tied. ,

I kinda agree with don't fight back esp if the other person is bigger.

However a good kick in the right place will cause any rapist / sex pest to think twice. Not that I am advocating violence.

Ideas

1. Say NO in a loud, clear assertive voice

Write down what has happened ASAP and report in writing keep copies of everything, dated etc.

That should be enough, at least the school know what has happened

The next time you can use physical means to make your point. And say you have said NO

People need to learn NO means NO sadly this is not taught by many parents. Children and kick / scream, they get what they want to keep em quiet. Parents find it easier.

Of course at one time teachers used to hit / cane people so the same rules that stop them caning you, are the same rules that stop them caning the person who tries to touch you in an inappropriate way.

Back then parents would give you a smack after saying NO to emphasise the fact they said NO

I am not sure what the solution is really. We can't keep blaming the internet, kids get on to these websites but it is parents should should be monitoring use etc and setting down rules.

@zleap NO. Fight Fight Fight even if it means you get injured more. Bodily injury generally heals faster then injury to one's heart and soul. And the idea that not fighting back means you escape trauma is ludicrous. And in my daughter's case she was grabbed from behind and wasn't really given a chance to say much of anything.

@Phil I think self defense classes would be good here, you can learn how to disarm people without causing much damage to them, other than to their pride .

It can be over in seconds, and sends a message.

Problem with the fight fight thing is here in the UK many kids seem to carry a knife your child could come off worse.

Still needs to be reported, and if the School head fails to give a satisfactory response go to the education authority and make a complaint.

This is a big issue in the UK so much so this website was set up

everyonesinvited.uk/

so victims can record their experiences.
