@Moon While as adults we can see things and then hopefully consider if what we see is true, false, misleading, Children may not be able to do that or need adults (who are capable) to help them. If the adults just believe everything, what chance do children have. ?

We are going to have a very traumatised generation, post covid, we are just recovering and now this.

@zleap @Moon
On one hand, I couldn't be more enthusiastic about the slow death of the entire concept of "expert" or "intellectual authority".

On the second hand, I am afraid about the cost of this. Is it going to get replaced by something worse, or are we going to be lost without it?

The term 'hacker' implies expertise, as far as I am aware it is bestowed on merit by people with similar expertise in something.

I guess this is a sort of peer review process for skills.

@zleap @LukeAlmighty you don't have to be an expert to be a hacker, indeed if you spend most of your time exploring, the majority of the time you are not going to be an expert yet. Hacker implies curiosity.
@icedquinn @LukeAlmighty @zleap my understanding is the word was actually in use before programmable computers were common, but not sure.
@Moon @icedquinn @LukeAlmighty @zleap jargon file:
>This term seems to have been first adopted as a badge in the 1960s by the hacker culture surrounding TMRC and the MIT AI Lab. We have a report that it was used in a sense close to this entry's by teenage radio hams and electronics tinkerers in the mid-1950s.
@Moon @icedquinn @LukeAlmighty @zleap it was. a label for someone who is bad at golf but plays obsessively anyway. or in any endeavor really, someone who is really an amateur, but digs autistically into the most minute details of it. sometimes a hacker could graduate into a pro, but usually they were just hackers.
