Agreed, who does Putin get replaced with?, Have Russians ever known democracy ? They had Tzars, who were overthrown in a revolution, then communism, they know nothing else. So little frame of reference to build on.
Granted communism was replaced with what was mean to be a democracy which didn't quite work out as that.

To be fair many of the older Russians do yearn for the explosion in scientific discovery and social progress that happened under #Soviet times. A friend we know is one of those.
Also some of the #millenials and #GenX'ers.
Its probably not a narrative that you'll ever hear in the legacyMedia. Different places have different ways of doing democracy, gauging the will of the people.

I agree there, the competition between US and Russia (USSR) pushed the space program forward.
