When "leaders" do the opposite of what common sense based on science indicates, there's a problem. In this case they lead us into danger, and scientists have a responsibility to speak and act out. To me it's no fun, but responsibility usually isn't fun. At least it's meaningful.

The UK government are now apparently going to apply road tax to electric vehicles. Following science generally means they lose revenue, so by following the science, they encourage use of electric cars, this reduces tax income.

To follow science further would have the same effect, so rather than seeing alternatives as a way to generate income for the country, which means more work for politicians they choose to ignore or pay lip servce to the science, or it seems that way. They do enough to be seen to be doing something.
