Hot take, fediverse going mainstream meta

Within the next 18 months we're going to see an explosion of invasive #tracking and #datascraping as major advertisers and #dataanalytics companies realize just how fucked Twitter is and start looking for new hunting grounds.

We, as #MastoAdmin and #mastoMods MUST have tools to easily lock out, allow list, and control who can have access to our users that are expecting us to protect their peace and privacy. We're going to see #spam ads from pop up domains in larger numbers, we're going to see garbage coming into our DMs like it used to on Twitter.

The reason these things weren't a larger issue on Twitter (until recently) was because of the infrastructure that went into managing and subduing that sort of behavior. The fediverse has none of that infrastructure, or really even tools.

If you do #MastoDev, please, we need to tools. Perfect is the enemy of done. We #mastoadmin need ways to share reports about problematic users and servers quickly and with notes and standardized categories. We need ways to identify and share with our peers and friends the things we are seeing and actions we are taking, and we need room for nuance and options in our response to unknown unknowns.

It's a big ask, but there's decades of these kinds of tools being built for email and other distributed systems, we don't have to start from nothing!

@Crazypedia

I am not an admin or mod, but fully agree here, I have no problem with a small or medium size business being on here, promoting what they do. If I want updates I just need their id / hashtag so I can follow, the caveat to that is if I reply to a post on a product and ask a question I expect an answer, because fedi is two way.

But as for datascraping, etc that you mentioned it is certainly NOT welcome and yes, we need mitigations in place ASAP to stop it.

We also need to ensure that the whole fedi is covered by these mitigations, what will stop advertiers using peertube for example.

I'm not sure about companies promoting their activities here. To me, it's a relief to have a platform that doesn't have ads, and I am willing to pay for it. To then see companies use it to grow their business isn't what I want. They can advertise elsewhere. This should keep its community feel, not letting commercial activities in. Maybe I'm a purist, but having seen small companies make their entry on other social media, soon followed by big ones & big money was sickening.

I understand your point, I was thinking it is about striking a balance, but in favour of the community aspect of this.

If there is a one person sole trader,lets say they make / sell items made from wood, Having related discussions around woodwork etc, they can share pictures and maybe other media, we can ask questions and they should answer, so as long as they respect the community aspect, they could feel welcome here.

I think we do have science journals on here, we certainly have accounts where jobs and articles are posted etc, profiles should like to their websites.

In fact if I buy a product, why not post a picture, and link to their website, where i got it from with a commennt. Being able to tag people in, even better.
