I want to experiment a bit more with the Fediverse and in particular Pixelfed as a replacement for Instagram.. From what I understand you can follow any Pixelfed account from within Mastodon. You don't need a Pixefed account in order to folIow an account on there. I mean, that's the whole point of the Fediverse! What I am not sure about is why you would post an image on Pixelfed, rather than directly here on Mastodon. Hopefully I'll find out. Anyway, I am @paulh on our local Pixelfed site.

I think pixel fed is designed / optimised for sharing pictures, so designed by creators for other creators to share their work. So other creators can comment on that.

Federation just allows people who are not on pixelfed to follow you and view / share / comment on what is created.

So I guess it gives people options on how they interact and who with.

@zleap @paulh Yes, I think that's it. The difference between Mastodon and Pixelfed seems similar to that between FB and Insta. You can post photos to both, but Pixelfed is better suited to posting photos/images. From what I can tell, you get a larger image on Pixelfed. And it only has images so you don't get the "clutter" of other types of posts as you do on Mastodon.
