I guess to add to this, the fediverse lacks the very things that make mainstream social media so popular

Celebritiy gossip
celebrity news
Sport gossip (well to a point I am following some NFL teams)
Influencers
Self proclaimed experts
And to a point fake stories, fake news, mis information, perhaps we are just better at critical thinking and can avoid / block that.

So we have the coronation at the weekend, no doubt mainstream social media will explode with people talking about it, opinions, (for and against) selfies and such like, what people are wearing, etc.

Meanwhile fedi will have very little or none of that, for me is is what appeals to me, the lack of all this on the internet.

Who gives a damn what Jonny Depp and Amberheard got up to or what the whining megan Markel is moaning about this time.

It does make conversations in real life interesting, esp as papers such as the daily mail use statements such as "THAT dress" probably to refer to something everyone was or is apparently talking about (I assume on social media)

I really like one of the interviews given during the soccer world cup, two girls randomly asked about it, they were unaware there was even a world cup being played, let alone that England were taking part, shows how it is bad idea to just 'assume' everyone knows about things, or to assume they are even interested.
