I'm pretty sure Canonical is on the wrong side of history with Snap... https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2023/05/immutable-all-snap-ubuntu-desktop I've already moved to snapless variants of Ubuntu and that sure ain't going to win me back.

yes ubuntu based distros made such a hash of device mounting it made the simple task of plugging in an Arduino to the USB port a total nightmare. Debian just works.

Debian 12 is due very soon, it will combine the non-free with the free iso to avoid all the confusion that causes,
My wifi card in my netbook need non free firmware to make it work and buying a new usb wifi thing is not an option at the moment

Huh?
from what I understand
Debian 11 and older had 2 isos
1 non-free (which had non free firmware / software support)
2. free (which had the non-free repository not included
The former was actually harder to find, but possible.
What they are doing with Debian 12 is just having a single ISO, so the non-free stuff is available.
I would as @debian for clarity.
The idea of having 1 ISO is to avoid all the confusion caused.

This ruinous compromise of software freedom values is really bad news, and makes me wonder what's been going on in the internal politics of the Debian project. Guess I won't be migrating to vanilla Debian after all.

If Ubuntu desktop goes all-in on Snaps, I wonder if that might finally drive the @trisquel team to rebase on Debian? I keep meaning to dual-boot a headless Debian and start getting used to it.
