Well, fuck.

Just been informed by my GP practice's pharmacist that there's now a national shortage of Rybelsus, aka Semaglutide, my most effective diabetes medication, that's likely to last into 2024. Influencers have been boosting it as a weight loss drug (it's the same drug—in tablet form—as Ozembic/Wegovy) and private clinics are buying up all the stock for image-conscious idiots, depriving diabetics of access.

(I have 12 weeks in the cupboard, then I may lose access for months.)

Influencers have been boosting it as a weight loss drug

1 Does it work as a weight loss drug ?
2. Are they qualified to actually recommend it as such

Seems that these influencers do more damage and don't care about the consequences.

@cstross @zleap Apparently it does indeed work as a weight loss drug, but only while you keep taking it - as soon as you stop, it all goes back on again. Generally not an issue when you’re taking it to treat high blood sugar, as diabetes doesn’t go away.

So clearly not suitable in all situations, which is people should follow professional medical advice, if need be seen a 2nd opinion from another medical professional. So that any prescribed course of medication / treatment is based on you and your body.

We are meant to be moving to a genetic based model slowly where treatment is more personalised to individuals.
