Climework's Orca DAC plant was designed to remove 4000 tonnes of CO₂ a year. How much did it actually remove? Does anyone know?

We all take it for granted that the two just-announced DAC hubs will remove 2 million tonnes of CO₂ a year. Will they actually achieve this?

@davidho Huh, interesting that there's no publicity about how awesome it's doing now that it's actually running. (Or at least theoretically running) Seems kinda sus.

@wordshaper @davidho
Yes, it's pilot plant only captured and sequestered 17 metric tons of CO2 out of our atmosphere today, but it's a good start for someone that cares about our planet's fate or can you provide your roadmap towards getting to gigaton capacity that is better than DAC?

@GreenFire @davidho Unless you're postulating that there will be gigaton-levels of CO2 removal specifically in Iceland I think it's extremely safe to say that the energy needed to do atmospheric CO2 removal will be *far* more effectively used to displace existing CO2 emissions. Consuming energy to remove CO2 from the air like this is only reasonable if you already have decarbonized your energy and transportation sectors and have nowhere else to send the megawatts.

@wordshaper @davidho
If you are hypothesizing that a gigaton scale industry can only be started after we've already all decarbonized completely than you are subjecting perhaps millions of species to extinction without trying to do anything to save them, but that is of course up to you.

The few billion dollars out of hundreds and hundreds of billions in the Inflation Reduction Act going towards starting a DAC industry here in USA will not delay decarbonization one day!

@GreenFire @wordshaper @davidho

Tax the billionaries and use 100 percent of that money to build this thing, with the caveat that that no one of them can buy, own or have anything to do with this new industry. We don't need these rich people screwing people over again and again.

@zleap @wordshaper @davidho
We're doing all we can and have been trying for a long time. We barely just managed to get the IRA passed finally yet now there are tons of people attacking us for doing it.

Damned if don't and damned if we do since it's so much easier to criticize than it is to actually do something.
