Dear open source committers and developers: never, EVER do this.

Newcomers need encouragement, mentorship, and support. Never dismiss days of work. Give them feedback and send them back to do it correctly.

OpenBSD is actually pretty good at massaging newcomers into producing solid patches, if you can ignore the haters on their mailing lists.

(blog post found via @vaurora, it's an excellent writeup of a problem I've seen too many times.)

I really do get the impression that a proportion of the community are toxic and others just LET it happen, they may be too scared to call it out.

Perhaps the bad actors and others and are rude and unhelpful should take a look at the news, Russell brand is being called out and investigated for sexual crimes, Lawrance fox from GB News in the UK has been suspended due to a comment he made,

Victims are starting to find they are actually stronger and are calling out people. This needs to happen in the software community so that ALL feel welcome, women especially don't need to use neutral user names to avoid abuse because they are women, and people can contribute to projects and as you say receive proper recognition and credit for doing so. If we fail to do that, we will lose contributors, and we need contributors to projects.

I agree with your comments, if you find a bug or problem, make a contribution then you should get the credit if nothing else you can then be contacted with regard to any follow up questions or issues that arise from this.

I am going to cc in the FSF as this is something the community needs to get a grip on perhaps.
