A missile strike on the al-Ahli hospital in Gaza has killed at least 500, according to local authorities. Palestinian Authority, Hamas, and Egypt all say it was an Israeli airstrike. Israel isn't confirming that, says they're investigating but that they warned the hospital to evacuate days ago. (Bombing hospitals is against international law, regardless of the warnings.)

There *are* videos going around Twitter claiming to be evidence of a Hamas missile misfire. Some of these videos, however, are shaky — one is a clip that doesn't seem to correspond to the livestream it was supposedly taken from. Others don't prove the source of the strike.

Airstrike seems most likely, but IDF says it didn't target the hospital.

Regardless, Hamas is responding with missile strikes into Israel, and protests have erupted in the West Bank and elsewhere. Israel has raised the threat level for Turkey, urging all of its citizens to leave there immediately.

Channels in Gaza reported a Hamas missile barrage immediately prior to the news of the al-Ahli hospital explosions. Some of those missiles hit Sderot, about 13km from the hospital.

Worth noting that Hamas channels also reported Israeli jets flying in the area. (Though, best I can tell, only after the news of the explosion.)

@justinling

Even if it was a misfire, from Hamas, if Israel wasn't trying to turn the whole of Gaza to rubble then there would probably be little reason for Hamas to file their missiles either.

Lets wait and find out the results of any investigations etc., and go with the facts.

But this is an interesting development if it can be verified.

@zleap

And why is Israel attacking Gaza now? Do you know how it started?

@EyalL

Because of the attack on on October 7th, but Gaza has been cut off with Israel controlling borders since something like 2007

@zleap the massacres and atrocities of Oct7

I protested against my government in Israel

Others who protested the occupation and fought for peace were massacred in cold blood in a nature party specifically targeted by dozens of murderers with machine guns, in their homes, in the streets.

One family for example found out their grandma was murdered in her home because Hamas took a photo of her in a pool of blood, and uploaded it on her phone to her feed.

@EyalL

I have no idea how the world is going to resolve all this, hut at this rate give it two / three weeks everyone in Gaza will perhaps starved to death.

It has to stop,

@zleap

Hopefully Hamas will collapse before that.

Senior Hamas commanders were eliminated in recent days

I expect a ground assault will start soon.

Hopefully within a couple of weeks Israel can destroy Hamas

@EyalL

I agree, however after which what happens? Does Israel or anyone to that matter, have a post Hamas plan, or is that plan about as existing as the post Saddam plan?

@zleap

Probably not.

Israel's government is awful

Perhaps after the horrors we've experienced, our people would elect more competent human beings, that will have a plan

But the day after is secondary to destroying the perpetrators so that it doesn't happen again and again and again (by Hezbollah too)

@EyalL

Both sides seem as bad as each other, neither want to give ground and talk, both feel they have the higher moral ground.

There is a reason Gaza is called the worlds largest open air prison, Israel controls everything in and out, that is going to upset the people inside.

There needs to be a diplomatic solution, the current government won't talk and after this I think they may be out of office andhopefully someone comes in who is more rational and able to help find a long term solution.
