I am so frustrated with how Apple is always shipping brand new hardware that is starved for storage and ram compared to the device’s purpose and price. Guys, I don’t mind paying for quality as long as you remember to include the quality
I think the local storage is low so that you use their cloud services.
@zleap this problem long predates Apple selling cloud storage larger than one hundred megabytes and also the cloud storage works by mirroring the local documents

It is amazingly frustrating, and it has grown worse now that both storage and RAM are soldered down and non-upgradeable. It used to be you get the small disk and change it out but you can't anymore.
This is where devices such as the pinephone and I think they make a
watch too.
