Yeah, it is really hard to spot what is going on when there is a class of 30 for example.

It may be they are bulled due to their clothing (may be parents are on low income) kids can be bullied for not having the latest phone or something else.

I did a course a while back on helping people with anxiety,

start with what you can't control and accept you can't do much about that, then look at what you can control and take more control of that

That is one reason, they withdraw to say online communities where people pretend to care and start the grooming process of building up trust.

@matrix maybe they want to force people on to newer hardware.

It's insane how Microsoft managed to make Windows unusable on a HDD

@thor @shibao @evelyn @FailForward
If a child discloses a problem we have to

reassure them they did the right thing speaking up

say we can't keep this a secret in order to help them we need to pass on what they say ( so in a school staff would go to the safeguarding lead)

We can;t ask clsoed questions as in those with just a yes / no answer

take notes and clarify what the child has told us, so we make accurate note and understanding.

@thor @shibao @evelyn @FailForward

Yes and when they ask for help it is a single window of opportunity to get involved, otherwise that opportunity can be lost for ever once people think no on cares they stop talking and trusting people.

Deeply personal

If you want to understand why it is that I talk about hate speech and antisemitism so much, please listen to this podcast

(sorry it's on Apple, this is what the author herself linked to)

And yes, I've been the subject of explicit antisemetic attacks, and I was also the subject of pressure to erase my Jewish identity. I was explicit told to do so by someone I worked with (you can guess who!)

This is why I'm so outspoken now, because fuck that noise.

@FailForward @thor @shibao @evelyn

Yes agreed, a doctor can't force help pn someone, they need to accept there is a problem and ask for help.

Courts may be able to, but that is slightly different.

@FailForward @thor @shibao @evelyn

Not sure if liking subjects such as science makes it easier to reflect on different ideas / views or solutions to a problem.

Seeing everything as black and white, yes or no makes it very hard to choose somewhere in between.

Kinda like the picture of a glass that is 1/2 full of water, is it half full or 1/2 empty,

From a science viewpoint it is FULL 1/2 full of water, 1/2 full of air.

@FailForward @piggo I agree with @aral idea that things need to be very easy to get started, a single click and form like facebook is.

@FailForward @thor @shibao @evelyn

I don;t think you can prevent this, in a world that is so unequal,

However people have arrived in the Uk with Nothing other than the clothes they are wearing, unable to speak much English but go on to get a first class degree at a top uni, due to hard work etc.

So I think you have a point it is how people are able to deal with their situation that is the key.

@thor @shibao @evelyn @FailForward

This is why we have safeguarding training in schools to identify early indicators a person is having problems.

@FailForward @piggo

I think itis more if people give up before they have even signed up. Once you sign up you get past. You need to want to keep going so you DO sign up and make that first post etc.

@thor @shibao @evelyn @FailForward

Indeed, and I guess part of the process is to blame women for their problem in the case of incels.

Far right may blame jews, (anti semetic) or other groups blame Muslims or immigration.

So once they do that, that person (thinks) they have a explanation for their problem.

@thor @shibao @evelyn @FailForward

I get that they are radicalised by others with the same views. I guess we need to identify early warnings signs or someone does.

Over here in the UK we have prevent, staff in a school HAVE to report children for playing if they are during that pretending to be a suicide bomber for example (or from the way I see it, kids just copy and try and make sense, through play of the world around them). Or i got that impression a few years ago, we need to be alert to any signs of kids with extreme views.

@FailForward @piggo

Yeah in a way it is a challenge to sign up so getting past that is like a test of how serious you are about being here.
