Lula has given a televised address calling the attack in Brasilia “barbarism” and assuring that everyone involved will be "found and punished".

He also said that "The police didn’t do anything at all. They just let the protesters in."

He called the rioters "fanatic fascists".

There will be a new vaccine on the market, but not for humans. Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture conditionally approved the first vaccine for #honeybees. It fights against a bacterial infection called American #Foulbrood. The vaccine trials, were run by a biotech company called Dalan Animal Health.

The #Autistic spectrum is not a line.

It is a series of "knobs" set at various levels for each manifestation of #Autism.

It is endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful.

The former recognises that torrents can be used to share both material legally and perhaps not so legally.

The latter only thinking that torrents are for piracy shows a lack of technical understanding, the latter worries me more, if i say I downloaded LinuxMint froma torrent as it is easie and helps spread it, they think it is somehow illegal.

I don't support sharing movies or music via torrents, however if I have got a legal copy of something say an LP I should be able to have a digital copy too, given the choice between torrenting a set of music files vs trying to convert a vinyl record to mp3, i would opt for the former.

After all I can rip a music cd to mp3.

I do believe in fair usage.

Just your regular reminder that those who claim we need new technologies to address the climate crisis are *really* saying that the overconsumption of the richest is more important than the rest of life on earth.
We have the tech we need for decent lives for all. 😘😘😘

@evan
It is important because we need to know it is happening, and how to challenge it.

Being ignorant of this rise, just throws open the door unchallenged, once they take hold our ability to challenge will be taken away.

Anyway, before we went on this numerical detour we were talking about radiation.

As you can see from the calculations above, astrophysical black holes are far colder than their surroundings.

The Cosmic Microwave Background is an ambient bath of photons with a temperature of about 2.7 K.

Black holes have a temperature, so they can radiate. But since astrophysical black holes are colder than their surroundings, they are out of thermal equilibrium and therefore absorb more energy than they emit.

What does this mean for the entropy?

The area of the Schwarzschild horizon is 4π times its radius squared. And the Planck length is astonishingly small – about 1.6 x 10⁻³⁴ meters. So the entropy of a 20 solar mass black hole is about 4 x 10⁷⁹ k_B.

This is many orders of magnitude larger than a self-gravitating ball of hot gas with comparable mass.

Black holes are far and away the most entropic objects in the Universe. Most of the entropy in the Universe is in the form of black holes.

If you are in San Francisco, consider shopping at Rainbow Grocery. They were hit by flooding and could use the support.

It is a worker-owned collective and has a lot of great stuff. The cheese department and bulk spices alone are worth the trip.

That's three billionths of a Kelvin above absolute zero for a Schwarzschild black hole twenty times as massive as our Sun.

The results for a rotating black hole (as far as we can tell, all astrophysical black holes have some amount of rotation) look a bit more complicated, but aren't quantitatively that different.

NASA Style Guide for reference:

“Gender-Specific Language (e.g., Manned Space Program vs. Human Space Program)

In general, all references to the space program should be non-gender-specific (e.g., human, piloted, unpiloted, robotic, as opposed to manned or unmanned).”

Every few months, I find myself recommending basically everyone read this one article about the protactile deafblind language. But particularly relevant to mastodon users (AND people working on automated image captioning) is its great discussion of what makes good alt text.

Don't add excess detail! It may make you look like a True Ally, but you're not helping blind people. audio.mcsweeneys.net/transcrip

@PfaffTino

I think there is more to it than this, everyone is subject to income tax, when over a certain threshold, the difference is the rich can afford to pay for advice on how to utilise tax havens etc.

There is also a difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion.

Closing down tax havens, or certainly closing tax loopholes would be a good thing, however actually making the tax system far less complex could also be something that should be considered, the more rules there are the more likely you will find a way to slip through.

We should take in to account philanthropy, if a person who earns a 'lot' of money invests that in to something else to help people, perhaps that should be taken in to consideration, I think it is and these donations can be used to offset the tax bill. Stop that and you end up with more people losing out.

What is also perhaps needed is a universal basic income, so we ALL earn a certain amount of money, this could be opt out as if you are already earning the amount some soccer players do, there is peraps less need for UBI.

I am not sure how UBI works though, is this say you get say 10K from the government, this is set in stone, then an money after that, starts at 0 so if you earn less than the lower tax band which I think in the Uk is 11k, then you can in effect earn 21k a year, without paying any tax, anything over that 21k, is subject to the lower tax band (as it is over that 11k threshold). As I said I don't quite understand how it works.

We need ideas as to how to move forward with everything, so we can re-distribute wealth AND opportunity to everyone properly.
