@cdevroe

*1 to this I would follow them as well as other agencies relating to space.

Someone give me the number of the NASA director. I want to tell him to get the entire agency on Mastodon.

@awesomeknight @Jaden2@mstdn.social

I agree with that also agree with @Jaden2 about racism. There was a post on here the other day about the lack of black scientists getting either funding or papers published. So long as there is inquality this will carry on being a problem. #

How much talent is being lost when we reject science on the basis of race,? which has no impact on the paper being written, the content or the quality, which is where the focus should be.

So the issue extends to more aspects of life in the US, There is no desire at the top to make it stop but at the same time too many people who don't want it to stop.

@stott @aral

I agree, but i think modern life, social media, has a lot to do with that, given that people who post they feel sad, are then, fed information on self harm,

If people are angry then that anger can be turned in to something positive (look at Adam Sandlers character in the waterboy) so what is needed is the desire to id people who are angry. try and redirect them to something where that anger can be channeled safely, then address the other issues they have.

@aral My son had an interesting insight the other day. He commented that some people just seem to be addicted to anger. If they can't find something to be angry about the create it to stir things up.

@TammyGentzel @Jaden2@mstdn.social

Thing is, how is an armed mob storming the capital building any different to a single armed person entering a school and starting to shoot at children. Congress is acting robustly on those who stormed the building and those behind that.

The acts are the same they are ARMED because of successive government failure to implement some form gun controls equally there is a failure to help those with Mental health issues, failure to deal with work / school bullying and a host of other reasons.

@Jaden2 My heart hurts with every shooting. I have no answers. I vote for gun control and legislators over rule my vote or the Courts step in and say it is unconstitutional. Some say it should be addressed using a public health model. That approach seems promising. It could be implemented locally while we wait for our national legislators to take action or we succeed in electing those who will. efsgv.org/learn/learn-more-abo

I know our carry on films are from the 60's and are not exactly PC, but there is a scene in Carry on Follow that camel, where Abdul is about to attack the French forign legion, who are enroute to relieve a fort which is going to be attacked by the natives, in order to boost morale (as they have been walking in the desert for days and got lost a few times) one of the officers suggests building sandcastles, this works until there is a disagreement on the winner. This causes a huge fight among them selves.

Meanwhile Abdul (who is watching) decides not to bother attacking them and declares "the actions of the WHITE infidel, is like the actions of the cleanser, clean round the bend" and orders the attack on the fort to commence.

Film was made in 1967, I still feel sometimes that comment seems rather apt,

@Jaden2@mstdn.social

I am from the UK and agree with you fully, It is not our job as Brits to dictate to the US, how you do things. From what I see is endless senseless killings of innocent people, promises of action, then nothing till the next mass shooting, the repeat. It really looks bad on Americans.

@SrRochardBunson @izstranger @kaydenpat

I think you are right people are blissfully unaware or ignorant of what is going on.

@flexghost

In libraries over here, all books have rfid tags on, so an alarm goes off if you try and walk out without checking the book out first. You can borrow books for a set amount of time, if you fail to return you get a fine.

Perhaps the US government need a similar system so that senior members of the government, including presidents can't just take stuff out without proper authorisation first. Sensitive top secret or sensitive stuff should NEVER be removed unless there is a good reason or safeguards are on place.

Here's a hugely scathing post from Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) on Moderna's staggering price hike on a life-saving vaccine created on the taxpayer's money. pluralistic.net/2023/01/25/nat

The series of blatant scandals around the abuses of the company are damning, but the worst thing of all this is that millions of people will unnecessarily die to satisfy not only corporate greed but ALSO further fueling #VaccineApartheid even more.

@hasmis

I agree there, make the rich pay more and ensure that the services that are needed are funded properly,.

@gannonburgett@mastodon.social @MattHodges

It needs people to post about what they are following at the time, without then appearing to be posting spam.

I tried posting updates to soccer games, so was using the command line tool 'toot' this worked, but resulted in very little interaction.

We did have a user tooting updates from a Astronomy science conference, so may be this is better, ratehr than having updates on the goings on with reality TV we have content that is more to do with science, even if most of the attendees are research level and what is being posted is high level. I did still interact with one or two posts and got a reply. I don't expect much as I appreciate people are busy.
