@alexlomas

I get the impression when it comes to Musk, the only thing that is important is money.

I always wondered why on earth SpaceX were permitted to launch such a huge vehicle from basically a protected wildlife reserve in Boca Chica.
This is a great write up and I hope it doesn’t cause significant damage.

No problem, but yeah good point we need a safe way to get there, and back again on a regular basis and some how make sure we have a ready supply of fuel at the moon end.

It seems to partly have something to do with where people get their news from.

Agreed on training, cars are also very dangerous, the emergency services are trained to drive, at speed in difficult conditions and are allowed to do so once trained. over here in the UK the police can use TPAC (Tactical pursuit and containment) to bring a car to a stop and hopefully arrest those in the car, however they are very strict conditions, training and they can only do so if it is safe for everyone involved, including innocent road users.

"guns aren’t the problem. People are the problem.”

I agree with this, for the following reasons, even though I don't have experience with guns or don't know much about them, so based on what I do know, which more common sense or the blatently obvious.

1. Guns are inanimate objects
2. Guns need ammunition to be loaded by a human
3. As far as I know, guns have some sort of safety mechanism to avoid accidental firing (lets all it a safety switch)
3a. So to fire, you need to set the gun put the safety switch in the OFF position
4. To hit a specific target, be it a Target in a range, an animal or human you need to aim the gun
5. There is an option to fire a warning shot, usually to scare off an animal for example,
6. There is also an option to maim and not kill your target

7. In order to do any of the points (and sub points) in 2-7 a HUMAN needs to make a decision or take action, based on the rational assessment of the situation, soldiers are trained to do this quickly for example, but it usually down to common sense.

So a gun lying on a desk, with no ammunition and with the safety OFF to me is just that, it is safe.

Hence I agree people are the problem, not the actual guns. Give a gun to a person who for what ever reason is irrational is a recipe for disaster. However having more and more guns, and more powerful guns at that is also a serious problem, so again humans make those decisions to allow them.

I fully appreciate the second amendment, so we can't change that. Guns are, in some cases clearly needed.

So what can the science community do about this, spacex is driven by profitterring from space, NASA et al are going to the moon for science reasons.

The only reason to send celebrities around the moon is so they can boost their already huge egos further. I see zero scientific benefit to that.

@zleap @sundogplanets
That would need capitalists to let their governments agree with one another. I won't be holding my breath on that one.

@13sarahmurphy Being no good at maths can mean anything from unable to add up simple numbers to being unable to do more complex maths.

A person who is an accountant surely needs to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers, are they really expected to be good at calculus or say complex algebra?

@barney

People are so paranoid they clearly think everyone who approaches them or their property is a threat.

A 20-year-old woman was driving to a friend's house, and she accidentally turned into the wrong driveway. While she was turning around to leave, the homeowner shot her to death.

America.

On the day Sunak tells us we should be embarrassed if we’re no good at maths, he gets investigated for failing to declare an interest in a company that stands to benefit from his new childcare scheme and in which his wife has shares.
He should be embarrassed for being no good at integrity.

Last fall, the Great Salt Lake hit its lowest level since record keeping began. It could disappear within five years.

And the Great Salt Lake isn’t unique. Many of the world’s saline lakes are facing a double whammy: People are taking more water from the tributaries that feed the lakes, while a hotter, drier climate means it takes longer to refill them.
