How to get famous on Mastodon:

1. Be genuine and engage with people
2. Carefully consider the impact of what you say; some people can be offended or put off by something you think is innocuous
3. Get a cat and post pictures

@MikeElgan

Why do we suddenly have people with anxiety over so many things, what happened to teaching resiliance at an early age, we try, we fail, we get back up and try again.

Ai is an opportunity and a potential threat, but we need to be able to discuss openly both sides of this, so we can come up with solutions to prevent any potential bad things from happening.

BREAKING: Starbucks to shut down *all* Ithaca locations as a part of its union busting efforts.

This means that over 30 people will lose their jobs, as a result of Starbucks' illegal anti-union efforts.
Ithaca was the first city that had 100% of its Starbucks stores unionized & now it will the first city to have all of its Starbucks stores shuttered.

The story hasn't broken locally yet (SB did a news dump last night); message me if you want to cover this

11.6 million people using Mastodon now. It is hosted on over 22,000 servers, but like with email, everyone can communicate with everyone else.

Since no one person or company owns those servers, no one person or company can buy them or break them. #Mastodon #TwitterMigration

One year ago today I left Twitter to pursue my dream of being an indie dev, and I’m really doing it.

It hasn’t been linear, I built Boutique and Bodega, have done a lot of writing, launched the Plinky beta, but it still felt a bit like I was playing indie since I hadn’t shipped yet. People using and *paying for* Short Circuit over the last few days has changed that.

It’s not about the money, it’s been proving to me that I can really achieve a dream I’ve had for over a decade. Thank you all. 🙏🏼

The problem in 2023 is people seem to want instant gratification, so sign up to the fedi and find something they want instantly. It doesn't work like that, you need to post, addin tags, find and follow people. Learning anything requires effort and probably a lot of patience. Something rather lacking.

It would have been funny if the gardeners at Buckingham palace had been tending the lawn / gardens in the nude just as people started to arrive post coronation.

This seems to be very similar to the campaign by the @fsfe PublicMoney{ublicCode that code written using public funds should be free software. Great idea. If research is funded via taxation then taxpayers partly own that research. OpenAccess is really important for other people to read, and build on.

This is big. No #embargoes. No #APCs.

"The #EU is ready to agree that immediate #OpenAccess to papers reporting publicly funded research should become the norm, w/o authors having to pay fees & that the bloc should support #nonprofit scholarly publishing models.

In a move that could send shockwaves through commercial scholarly #publishing, the positions are due to be adopted by the Council of the EU member state governments later this month."

Pre-musk Twitter for me still had a lot less interaction, I have found people on here posting content of interest, because I follow tags, rather than having algorithms suggest what to follow based on location.

I’m genuinely not worried about BlueSky. Some people are rushing to see what’s behind the velvet rope and be part of the “New Twitter.” The cryptos, trolls, and bots will be there soon enough, Mastodon and the Fediverse is building something wonderful, and shows that even the old, pre-Musk Twitter was problematic.

@dangoodin @slut @kurtisj @dangillmor No not at all. I'm saying that journalists aren't leaving because they feel they have an audience on Twitter, be it ever so and increasingly deplorable. And because mastodon can't deliver them an audience which is centralised and captive they don't see the value in it. I feel if you ask a journalist or a politician or an advertiser to choose between morality or an audience, they will always choose the audience.

And the problem is that one of the things I love about mastodon is that I am not a captive audience for all of those egotists. And I don't wish mastodon to ever evolve into that. I would like mastodon to be a place where I follow those that I respect.

Mastodon is a peaceful village square, Twitter is Times Square where you are imprisoned in stocks and buffoons shout at you. When everyone is in the village square, what will the buffoons do?

@stevestreza

We need to build a better model, they do exist, just probably need traction and awareness from listeners as to where their money gets to.
