HUGE: pinned post at the law subreddit:
(full text in the ALT)

"Since Musk took control of Twitter [...] CSAM (child sexual abuse material) has apparently been circulating on Twitter recently [...]

As a result, we'll be removing any content here that leads to Twitter, or, as he now calls it, X. Whether it's an embed link or a direct link to a tweet. Don't care what outlet is doing it. If you're a reporter or editor, stop embedding links to Twitter in any of your content [...]"

@marjolica @techghoul

Short-ish version:

1) There's a list of really bad Mastodon instances that only exist to host CSAM and launch attacks on Black folk, brown folk, Jewish folk, women, LGBTQIA folk, and other marginalized groups. It's a full time job keeping up with new additions to that list.

2) Some experienced admins do this work to block them, but most new admins don't. There are now 26K instances, most of which have new-ish admins that don't block this "worst of the worst" list.

@mekkaokereke @marjolica @techghoul

I guess this is a difficult thing to respond to, one the one hand they SHOULD be blocking / dealing with this, as a vast majority of people would expect them to. On the other hand we are NOT here to TELL others what they can / can't do on/with their own servers.

However in the case of CSAM and the other content you are citing, this problem is going to impact everyone one of us, like it or not.

So can we offer help / support to new admins, running ones own server sounds fun, exciting etc, but there is little mention of the fact that this material is out there and as an admin you need to be part of the solution to block it.

Perhaps we need to make it clear and be open in guides that this IS a huge problem and one should consider that if setting up instances.

There is a sign somewhere that says, something like

Teenagers

Tired of your stupid parents making up the rules

Move out, get a job pay the rent / bills while you still know it all.

In other words, it is NOT as easy as you think

Same goes for running an instance, I get that without running one.

So how can the rational / moral / ethical / law abiding members of this community help?

@peterdutoit

I fully agree, I am not an expert, but am interested in Astronomy, we talk about planets such as Venus of having 'runaway greenhouse effect' We study other planets so we can learn, so why are humans not learning the lessons of this science.

The blame for this lies squarely with politicians and their failure to TELL big oil they are no longer needed, failure to invest in alternatives, failure to invest in skills needed to transition to electric / hydrogen powered and cleaner alternatives etc.

We are now facing the prospect of watering down net zero, and green enegy plans. So we are screwed who ever wins the Uk general election in 2024.

@peterdutoit

We seem to have under estimated the speed / time scale of changes and their effects. Being told this will happen within the next century means most people will be dead and not affected, so less urgency, our me me society means that we don't consider the consequences on subsequent generations.

What appears to have happened is that these temperature rises seem to be happening far quicker than these predictions. We just had a report about the gulf stream collapsing, again this could happen by 2025 or decades ahead.

Of course, If I understand things, predictions are based on collected data, historical data and how we analyse that data, what data we put in to the model.

As we have failed to take things in to consideration or got wrong results is just siezed upom by climate deniers to question or models, (they don't have their own alternative data backed model of course).

Of course we can't input all factors, as I am guessing that has its own issues.

So clearly not suitable in all situations, which is people should follow professional medical advice, if need be seen a 2nd opinion from another medical professional. So that any prescribed course of medication / treatment is based on you and your body.

We are meant to be moving to a genetic based model slowly where treatment is more personalised to individuals.

@uspolitics

Maybe it is time Alcatraz had a former president as a permanent resident.

He can think of it as a sort of caretaker role, job for life he just needs to keep the floors swept etc;

Coming Monday (31. July) we will declare "First Light" for #ESAEuclid 🛰️ and show the first engineering images that the #VIS and #NISP instruments 📷 have taken of the sky, using a fully focussed telescope! 🔭

One of the most important things for children is that we encourage and support them to think and question.
Books are the world that offers a universe of possibilities.

Without books, without the freedom to access them, you create a stunted society....
which unfortunately some want to have.

As Aristotle said about what he taught his most famous student....I teach him to think.

Busted:

The UK's ambition to allow 'youth mobility' deals with EU countries doesn't look like an innocent desire to allow young people access to our culture but rather... in the words of an EU official:

'What it looks like is EU youth being brought in to get paid minimum wage rates, without the in-work benefits. It’s not clear that young Europeans will be treated like young Brits'!

Oops, such a transparent move was never going to go un-noticed in Brussels, Rishi (you numpty!)

At a classical concert the other day, my dad started talking with the man beside him, who said he was a journalist. When my dad introduced himself, the man said the name “Hayhoe” was familiar to him, because of “the notorious climate activist Katharine Hayhoe.” I think that's a good thing 😁

My dad, a science educator, then asked, "so what evidence WOULD convince you that climate change is real and serious?" He had no good answer--and I wouldn't expect him to, because climate denial isn't about facts. It's about looking for plausible excuses to stonewall climate solutions.

In my experience, 99.9% of climate denial is solution aversion. But because most of us prefer to perceive ourselves as good people, and saying "sure, this is a real problem that's affecting real people especially the poor and vulnerable but I don't want to fix it" isn't good, we seize on any excuse (it's not real! it's not human-caused! those scientists are cooking the data for profit! CO2 greens the planet! We can adapt! It's too late anyways!) to justify our desire for inaction.

Well, fuck.

Just been informed by my GP practice's pharmacist that there's now a national shortage of Rybelsus, aka Semaglutide, my most effective diabetes medication, that's likely to last into 2024. Influencers have been boosting it as a weight loss drug (it's the same drug—in tablet form—as Ozembic/Wegovy) and private clinics are buying up all the stock for image-conscious idiots, depriving diabetics of access.

(I have 12 weeks in the cupboard, then I may lose access for months.)

@cstross

Influencers have been boosting it as a weight loss drug

1 Does it work as a weight loss drug ?
2. Are they qualified to actually recommend it as such

Seems that these influencers do more damage and don't care about the consequences.

@RollingStone

I get the i,impression that Trump never listens unless it is his own voice.

Pro-tip: when you are in an intense “intellectual debate” with someone on social media, imagine them sitting on the toilet… because they probably are.
