"Given the unfortunate continued #misinformation from The Good Food Institute and other private PR armies of the #cellmeat #slimefood conglomerates, it's important to keep in mind that none this has anything to do with #climate, #health, or the #environment, and everything, instead, to do with the complete conversion of #protein into #intellectualProperty - or, basically, #software as #food"(from LinkedIn) sethitzkan.medium.com/opinion-

Seems like the message is getting through Trump / GOP is bad

45 climate scientists were asked what we thought of this years' climate disasters. Here are the highlights.

We all pretty much agree that "despite it certainly feeling as if events had taken a frightening turn, global heating to date is entirely in line with 3 decades of scientific predictions. But being proved right is cold comfort, as our warnings had so far been largely in vain."

"Climate science’s projections are pretty robust over the last decades. Unfortunately, humanity’s stubbornness to spew out ever higher amounts of greenhouse gases has also been pretty robust." @meinshausen

"What we are seeing this year is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, of what we expect to happen,” says Natalie Mahowald, and "this will become the average summer in 10 years’ time unless the world cooperates and puts climate action top of the agenda" adds Piers Forster.

As Gavin Schmidt said previously, we are not surprised, but we are shocked. Krishna AchutaRao agrees, adding that "the impacts are frighteningly more impactful than I – and many climate scientists I know – expected.”

As a result, psychological distance is decreasing. “I do think we are hitting a tipping point in global consciousness,” I said. “Nearly everyone can now point to someone or somewhere they love that is being affected by wildfire smoke, heat extremes, flooding, and more.”

And we all agree about what needs to be done. “We need to stop burning fossil fuels,” says Fredi Otto. “Now."

* By "we," we mean starting with the biggest emitters. As Paola Arias says, "We need a just + equitable transition. A very small % of the population is responsible for most greenhouse gas emissions.” [specifically, Oxfam finds that the richest 1% produce 2x the carbon of the poorest 50%]

Agreed, but given some of what has happened over the summer, Letby trial, and management fails, data hacks, data breaches, barge farce, police being told to deal with crime, poor kier starmer won't know where to start, but he will seek answers and sunaks responses are going to be very telling, even if a pack of lies.

But yes, roll on the GE

With regard to the UK 'stop the boats' policy which is clearly not working, with many saying that we should be targeting traffickers.

What does international law say about this, do the UK authorities have jurisdiction to run undercover operations in other countries to find the actual traffickers, or should this be left to Europol / Interpol?

I would suspect those on French beaches are not the people who are at the top, they just hand out boats, the issue seems to be with those who are in other countries selling routes to the UK via land / sea, taking money and then not caring about if that person even arrives safely.

Another reason for people to be able to claim asylum closer to their point of origin, and this actually goes for anyone, wanting to reach the EU. Seems more people are dying on the Med, and will continue to die.

Who has the legal right to arrest the traffickers, where would they stand trial, etc.

@glynmoody

"Neither of these options are practical. Nor are they lawful — not as long as the UK government feels it can impose its will on entities located outside of its borders. But the UK continues to persist. And it apparently won’t stop until the rest of the world gives it what it wants."

It seems to me that the Tory government still thinks Britain has a huge world wide empire, where it can impose it's will and laws on others.

my advice to teh Tories is to get in to the 21st century.

@glynmoody

Well it is 14 months until 2025, the UK government HAVE to call a general election within that timne frame, so with any luck, they will be voted out.

The UK government is a law unto itself and getting worse.

Roll on PMQs so questions can be asked of the PM as to what is going on.

The important thing is, that dialogue conducted nicely should hopefully solve the issue, It will be interesting with the new Online safety bill, if that causes more sites to be blocked that should not be blocked.

@zleap I guess there is a *chance* that long running sites such as archive.org and the Open Rights Group *could* have moved IP address to something that was counted as "adult" since these "adult content blocks" were introduced. There is no way to know for sure thanks to the opacity of it all.

@Green_Footballs

He is a disgrace, the longer this goes on, the more the US will simply lose all credibility, put him in Prison Now.

Not gonna post a screenshot because you already know what he says, but Trump is ranting and spewing hate judge Chutkan, Jack Smith, and many others on his crappy website.

He’s going to keep doing this unless they put him in jail. Anyone else who did shit like this would already be in custody.

Trump constantly whines and cries that he’s a victim, but the truth is he’s getting unbelievably lenient treatment.

@slowe

Last year the big blue button server I using was blocked at my local library, I asked the server admin (whom I know from IRC) and he suggested the IP may be blocked, so IP addresses may be used by adult or other sites, if that site is shut down, the IP may be linked to another server / domain, however that IP may still be blocked, the result is the new site is also blocked.

So there may be an innocent explanation, if they become aware that the new IP is linked to a site that should not be blocked they should be able to update their record / databases to suit.

They are required to administer an "adult content" block by Ofcom (UK Government). Any oversight of this arms-length Government censorship is opaque. There is no way to see what is blocked or why. And it seems they'll even outright deny blocking domains despite their branded "adult content block" page being what you get when you try to visit (and doesn't if you use a VPN). Designed so that everyone can deny any responsibility whilst censoring stuff that isn't "adult".
