We should as our Home secretary suggests modify the convention on refugees, however we should add a clause in there, that countries that mostly cause global warming are accountable to the millions of people who will be displaced by global warming and especially people where temperature rises are going to cause vast areas to be uninhabitable due to excessive heat, crop failure and water shortages as a result.
We know that this is going to cause migration to cooler areas (which is prefectly understandable) when countries that have contributed to this warming are legally obligated to take people IN, then the policy of drilling for MORE oil, when there is clearly little need to, will probably be stopped very quickly.
We need to invest in renewables, we need to invest in finding alternatives to as many products we get from oil, it just needs us to re-direct billions of oil subsidies in to R&D and schools so we can ensure generations to come have a proper level of education so they can carry out this R&D.
I am sure braverman will be very happy to knopw that her parties policies will lead to MORE migration, but to have this happen as a legal obligation on HER OWN suggestion is poetic justice to her comment that she apparently made to suggest that migration is an threat to our existance.
NO drilling for oil is a threat to our existance.
Kind of makes sense if Anti matter and normal matter both have mass.
Einstein right again: Antimatter falls “down” due to gravity like ordinary matter. CERN's ALPHA experiment confirms matter and antimatter react to gravity in a similar way. https://arstechnica.com/?p=1971331
High in the jungle mountains of Flores Island in Indonesia at an altitude of 4200ft. is one of last remaining ancient and isolated villages in the world. Called Wae Rebo, village has been occupied by the Manggaraian people for almost 2,000 years.
There are eight traditional conical thatched homes called Mbaru Tembong that are occupied by one or more families. Subsisting on agriculture products like taro, coffee, vegetables and jungle meat, their lifestyle has changed little in two millennia.
I am more of a chemistry person but IIRC mitochondria are key to the function of cells or rather the proper function of cells. They give cells energy too I think.
Just been informed that here are a few on BlueSky so I assume that is research scientists.
If we can build a good community on both here and bluesky it would be a good thing,
@purplepadma Commercial entities use it to advertise into the void.. But as a research scientist myself (and usually the one who does the hiring/firing/promoting) I can assure you, it does absolutely nothing to advance your career, and if it does anything it might even hurt it these days.
Come Together

I think if we can help anyone who wants to move away from Twitter / X then it is a good thing.
I agree with this, you can be here, quit twitter and maintain your integrity
I will boost, but I am sure a large number of academics have moved here to get away from the toxicity on X
Carbon-rich peatlands continue to be cleared and drained in an Indonesian protected wildlife reserve known as the “orangutan capital of the world,” with 26 kilometers (16 miles) of new canals dug so far in 2023, up from 9 km (5.6 mi) in 2022, according to an investigation by the advocacy group Rainforest Action Network (RAN).

Anti-gay discrimination not qualification for asylum, says Suella Braverman

So asking on here, as I may get a more reasonable debate from it. Does she have a point, but not in the way she should like us to think. (she is anti immigration)
The UN resolution she is refering to and wants to change, was written and signed back in 1951
Since then the world has changed, we still have wars, and this still causes displacements of people
We have seen the rise in Communism (China, N Korea)
We have seen the fall of communism (Russia)
We have made huge medical strides so people live longer, there is less need for lower skilled jobs that would have been filled by migration BUT we have seen a greater demand for higher skills, which countries need to seek out the best talent from around the world
Populations are aging, so we need a working population too, It seems Japan has a big issue with the number of people who are retired are more than the people of working age.
We have seen the rise of globalisation,
Fall of empires (The British empire for one)
Corporations now call more shots and control much of our lives, they care for profits not the lives of people they employ or even serve.
Inequality is STILL a massive issue for many.
Racism is STILL happening despite it being 2023.
Being LGBTQ is now legal in many more countries than it was back in the 50's and is more widely accepted, however it is still illegal in many and people are risking execution or torture (so Bravermans argument is less valid) Recent events in the USA highlight that the safeguards and laws that are in place can't be maintained or taken for granted.
Weather events are going to be more extreme, the world is heating up and we know why, this is going to cause problems (e.g) for food production etc and if it is too hot for people to live they WILL migrate
Attitudes towards the environment have changed, information age means more people know what is going on,
So the world has changed, and as a result migration has, I guess also changed, so looking at the convention as to what is a refugee, perhaps should be looked at in the context of 2023, and see what has changed so these documents reflect the needs of people today.
Anoter point she seems to be wrong on
"She said: "As case law has developed, what we have seen in practice is an interpretive shift away from 'persecution', in favour of something more akin to a definition of 'discrimination'."
From this side of the atlantic, I would see the policies of DeSantis et al to be persecution and not just discriminatory. People face being arrested and executed in Iran just for not wearing the right clothing, I see discrimination and denying someone a product, or service for falling within a particular group (granted it IS more complex than that).
We need a world wide refugee policy that is fair to all, but perhaps what we need is to start at home, tax the corporations and use the money to invest so that people all over the world can benefit from the global tech age in the right way.

Great stuff, will check this out and it could be really useful
Everyone feels justified in what they want to do. That’s why we need core values and rules to judge our own behavior. But righties are inherently selfish and justify everything they do.
So a computer repairman is allowed to access all your data, give copies and the password to anyone, and those people can share anything on it as well as getting more passwords from the laptop to access more data.
Now they’re all getting sued and think they’re the victims. Waah! 😭
