Finally found the missing sock (which went missing the very first time I tried washing it). Doing laundry again today, a sock fell between the washer and the wall and I saw it fall. I could just barely reach it by hand, but I had to get on my knees to do so. When I did that, I could see there was another sock there I could not reach.

I'd seen that sock before but didn't think it was mine because the stripes were nowhere in evidence. But it fell so the mostly-grey sole was up.

Astronomers obtained new #JWST data on TRAPPIST-1 b, the #planet in the system closest to its #star.

New observations offer insights into how a star can affect observations of #exoplanets in the habitable zone of cool #stars.

Thwre were no signs of an atmosphere around TRAPPIST-1 b. This tells that the planet could be a bare rock, have uniform clouds or a dense atmosphere that makes it too small to detect.

One of these days a group of locals are going to snap and will get hold of some of these vandles and give them such a heafy beating the injuries don't bare thinking about.

I AM in OW WAY advocating this level of violence, BUT people have had enough, sick of the police, courts appearing unable to deal with it, sick of other excuses and they will simply snap and act.

As I said in another post, what has to happen before someone takes action to put a stop to it. We saw the crooked house in the Midlands burnt down recently.

Either politicians, the police, parents, courts etc will put a stop to this or the LOCALS will, and if it is down to the latter as with my first paragraph don't expect a light slap on the wrist.

@airadam

Not only that but those who commit some of these crimes use their phones, take videos and share on social to boast about what they have done or are doing, as if doing so and getting likes is a status symbol.

Perhaps therein lies the problem too.

They know there is no punishment, no consequences, no life time record in some cases, they can act with impunity.

@AstroDave

Right now in the UK it is clear and blue sky, so the fact this event is happening is a clear guarantee it will be at least cloudy tonight.

If I get a chance to take a look, I will, see if my binoculars will allow me to see them.

Tonight: Jupiter’s major four Galilean moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are in 1-2-3-4 order, from 19:31 Universal Time (UT) when Io swaps places with Europa, until 21:16 UT, when Io disappears in Jove’s shadow.

This event favors Europe, Africa and most of Asia. Jupiter is headed towards opposition for 2023 on November 3rd, ruling the night from sunset ‘til sunrise. The waning gibbous Moon joins the view this weekend, passing 3.1 degrees north of Jupiter Sunday night.

I think it is difficult problem to solve, Is your social media attached to a desktop computer or mobile smart phone? The latter is with people 24/7 (or appears to be the case for many) so people feel they have to respond in more real time.

I log in to Mastodon via netbook / desktop so perhaps respond o things when I decide to login to Mstodon. That does seem to help keep things under control.

I am not obsessed with social media anyway so mastodons lack of algorithms means I am not made to feel guilty for not responding or even logging in for a few days.

So don't worry if you just login here once a week for example that is fine.

I’ve been finding it hard to post recently because I don’t want to get sucked in to social media being my whole life again the way it was when I was on Twitter. But of course that’s resulted in me pulling back too much and I’m trying to find the middle ground. Sorry for all the meta but this is a real struggle for me atm!

Fast forward to 2023, we have people under 18 stabbing each other ( and others ) to death, so not that much seems to have changed.

Students made Oxford the murder capital of late medieval England, research suggests

phys.org/news/2023-09-students

> A project mapping medieval England's known murder cases has now added Oxford and York to its street plan of London's 14th century slayings, and found that Oxford's student population was by far the most lethally violent of all social or professional groups in any of the three cities.

Quite a few comics and celebrities that I like still use X. At this point, it’s common knowledge how terrible Elon is, and it’s becoming inexcusable for anyone to support him or use his platform. I don’t care that it’s a way to reach the masses. The only reason that is still applicable is because “the masses” are using it to have easier access to the people who still support it. It’s a loop, and someone needs to step up and encourage boycotting it.

@chowderman @EugeneMcParland

I was about 11/12 when it happened, so can't remember much other than there was some sort of radiation cloud being tracked heading across Europe, this was a major concern.

@Miro_Collas Good point, Given NASA is funded by US taxpayers, may be we can find more examples of where projects have been delivered on tine and budget. We need people to be asking questions in the UK to force change here, we are so used to incompetence it is just normalised I guess.

@zleap Nice thought! However, politicians these days exist mainly to make BigBiz happy, which means giving them more money in all kinds of "creative" ways.

Opting Out of TurnItIn

The web service TurnItIn is a "plagiarism detector". Lots of universities use it to assess whether their students are copy-n-pasting content which they haven't written.

I'm not a big fan of it. First, I'll explain how to opt-out your websites. Then I'll explain why I don't like the service.

Perhaps opposition parties need to look in to the NASA Osiris-Rex mission, this was completed on schedule AND underbudget so if they can do it, then it proves it is possible to do things properly. What can they learn from this and how can they apply some of this learning to projects they will undertake while in office?
