@cwebber This is the advantage with OSS. People can re write the code for say Mastodon, maintain the activity pub element, and remain part of the fediverse just with their own UI.
🌏 Introducing https://mapstodon.space, a new Mastodon instance for the mapping & geospatial community 🚀
Mapstodon is intended to be a gathering space for GIS, mapping, geospatial & cartography professionals and enthusiasts, regardless of the tools you use. Ask questions. Share your maps. And above all: enjoy the @qgis emoji
👀
Thanks, I think this should be fixed now
I've seen new Mastodon users compare the vibe of the Fediverse with the excitement and experimentation of the early days of the web.
If you missed those days or want to learn more I recommend The History of the Web project. It's available as a low-traffic newsletter:
https://thehistoryoftheweb.com
or blog:
https://thehistoryoftheweb.com/archives
Every issue delivers fascinating stories backed with solid research. I did live through those days, yet I discover a lot of events or projects I didn't know about.
Welcome to my new followers!
I post about #GNU #Emacs #Orgmode and #FreeSoftware.
I don't post often and I don't actively participate to conversations on Mastodon as I prefer emails. But I'm glad this place exists 🙂
To check projects I contribute to and projects/hackers I support, see https://bzg.fr/en/free-software
Have a nice day!
@adamasnemesis Sounds interesting
Using the sun as a gravitational lens, a near-future telescope could get a 1300-pixel image of an Earth-sized planet 100 light-years away...and a 1-pixel image of an Earth-sized planet *100,000* light-years away.

#introduction - Hello - I'm new on the #fediverse but that didn't stop me from diving in head first. I stood up the fenetre.dev instance of #mastodon this afternoon. I'm a technologist, developer, and SRE-type working for corporate America.
I have a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology but I should have gone to school for computer science since that's what I do now - building CI/CD pipelines and writing tools in #golang. I love #photography, #vinyl and #coffee. Ask me anything.
Hello #fediverse, I'm back.
Sorry for leaving two months ago, I had to bite the bullet and shut down my own #friendica instance for various reasons: update problems (and thus security risk), removal of a feature I heavily relied on, and some bug I couldn't track town that prevented many mastodon users from following. :-/
Now trying hosted mastodon. Wish me luck.
TL;DR: The 'verse as a whole is a free speech platform, in that anyone can spin up an instance and use it to say whatever they want. But there are a wide range of tools designed to make sure nobody is forced to listen to them.

Last year I tried to invite people or charities who were involved in helping people with #MentalHealth issues perhaps now we have more users they will be more likely to join and advocate their services
@anas_abdulhak Activity pub is a communication protocol that allows instances to talk and share content.
I am sure others here can give a more accurate technical explanation
"How to host your own Fediverse instance?"
Vielleicht ist das ja für jemanden interessant. Neben den dort aufgezeigten Möglichkeiten, gibt es natürlich noch weitere.

If you are (re-)discovering the joy of community-built technology that's not controlled by a billionaire, allow me to plug an even older tech:
An RSS/Atom feed reader is a great companion to a more conversational social media "site" like Mastodon.
Google killed its Reader product years ago, but there are still many great ones. I personally use https://newsblur.com/, which also has a mobile app, synchronizes across devices, and is open source. (If you have a favorite, please reply with it!)

You would hope the admin is able to give priorwarning.
I'm writing an article about this glorious, weird weekend on Mastodon during the nascent Twitter exodus.
My theory is that Mastodon's shortcomings are the very reason it's working. We're having to help each other find our way. No one is boss, and the kinda crappy experience brings us all to the same level as co-newbies (not to belittle those who have been on Mastodon for years).
Are you feeling the same? I'd love to hear your opinions. #NZTwits #twittermigration #introduction #mastodon
