Nursing strike
Health Secretary Steve Barclay says nurses voting to strike UK-wide - for the first time in history - is "disappointing".
You know what's really disappointing?
Clapping for frontline heroes then not paying them properly.
Refusing to give NHS staff a pay rise in line with inflation for 12 years.
Nurses relying on food banks.
This is pretty amazing news for both biology and AI. "Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis explains how its AlphaFold AI program predicted the 3-D structure of every known protein."

Simiar to youtube but decentralised, For example you can search for my content if you enter @zleap@diide.zone in to the mastodon search bar above.
The nice thing about activity pub, which makes that possible.
PeerTube, developed by Framasoft, is the free and decentralized alternative to video platforms, providing you over 600,000 videos published by 150,000 users and viewed over 70 million times
@Paarsec The blocking / muting tools on here are good, and we can also report people too, I think a pre emptive plan is already in place, if we all work together to block / report issues then we can as a community keep on top of it.
@david_colquhoun Happy you came over!
As for #journalists, there are a few lists:
@tchambers has a lovely google doc going:

I have a github list:

and
@WalterShaub are also compiling lists
We need to be careful that we don;t give those incarcerated in prison the right to access software so they can go in to harass victims or arrange for that out side of prisons.
We have the right to contac tpeople e.g friends / family but people also have the right NOT to be contacted.
Of course using free software in prisons as part of education programmes, access to services, support etc then YES I am all for that.
But as prisons are usually publicly funded that may come under the Public Money, Public Code campaign.

Somebody should tell @TheRealElvira that to prove she's the real Elvira (
) she should verify the link to her homepage

Mastodon is insanely more rewarding for me than Twitter. With about a 10th of the followers, it draws almost as many views to my videos as Twitter. The platform is really, really good.
I also love the feeling of using an #opensource platform to communicate with people.
@thelinuxEXP Thank you for this, I am sure I speak for the admins who run the services and those who develop the software that this means a lot to them.
🚨 THIS is how you do it at PMQs
@bestforbritain Problem is we are stuck with this lot till they call an election.
Online safety bill in due course, we should have had that in place by now, meanwhile MPs face abuse, children face being targeted with self harm and other content, and they just dither and delay.
I think more research is needed but perhaps the fedi opens up new opportunities for people to do that research on the fediverse.
in the mean time it would be good to get political parties on here, so they can engage, just not sure on the best way to do that., of course they would run their own instance, which will possibly help with moderation.
I agree here, we need to be careful with wording.
Rather than saying Friendica is a facebook replacement, we should perhaps think about the services within facebook it does or can replace and promote that.
Of course a lot of people would leave facebook, only they are unable to as they are in touch with people on there who also won't leave due to specific groups or friends.
#introduction I'm a lecturer (assistant prof) at Royal Holloway University (UK). I study human perception and decision-making combining experiments and computational models. I like teaching statistics and helping others in their data modelling. I post (and sometimes blog here https://mlisi.xyz/) about #bayesian #statistics using #stan and #rstats, and #cogsci and #neuroscience in general.
Scale of abuse of politicians on Twitter revealed

A good reason to see how we can help politicians to be on here to engage. I just worry about what they will drag in with them
QOTO is a stem instance int he sense that we require people who join be either STEM professionals or at least enthusiasts. So if that is a fitting description then your friend is welcome.
That said we do not require the topics discussed here be only STEM.. We are a general instance in the sense that you can talk about almost anything you want here.
Naturally being a bunch of nerds many of the topics you list are very common topics here.
I think we can all agree that at this point the Fedi is now fairly main stream, there is no rush to "get here", it will only stress and frustrate people.
This is a marathon, not a race.
