Sometimes I miss Twitter, but then you find out how Elon Musk reinstated traitor Flynn on the 2 year Anniversary of the Jan 6 insurrection & you are reminded why you can't be a part of it anymore.

@sinvega

IRC c&c games did that, yes sir, affirmative, very well, yes comrade etc or agghhhh if they got killed.

My Twitter timeline is full of anger. My Mastodon timeline is full of photos of far off places, wine, and poetry. To those who complain Mastodon isn't Twitter my reply is, you're right, it's different and better. #TwitterMigration

Just South of San Francisco, Mori Point in Pacifica CA was our home for twelve years, before we moved to New Hampshire.

Just finished updating my trail review with better maps and photographs. More here: trailspotting.com/2021/07/mori

Thanks for this, really useful,

I can see a few students failing over using this, which while I only did a certificate in science with the OU the essays are HARD WORK to do.

Students who don't put in effort don't deserve to get good grades over those who put in the real effort of research, writing, referencing etc.

@zleap @ilyaz

Well, it can do citations. But all the ones I checked were made up.

Here's what I wrote a while ago for my students:

Ok, this is cool: a team of biologists worked out that turtles can talk. The hatchlings even talk to each other in the egg to coordinate their hatching. Turtle talk is at frequencies not very audible for humans and it can take hours for some species to reply to each other.

“Had we had a bit more expansive imaginations, we might have caught this earlier,” said Karen Bakker, a fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

One day they will get caught out. out of interest does ChatGPT write essays that are fully cited, with references,biblograplies, lists of tables, figures etc. As you would find in full academic papers.

Because I've been asked privately a few times what I think of students using #ChatGPT to cheat with essays and stuff, just a very short word on that here:

It's completely understandable in a society that teaches people that degrees are more important than skills.

@zleap @samyalkenawi The book partially overlaps with Queisser's book:

goodreads.com/book/show/137478

Queisser was a pretty bigwig guy in German solid state physics, and his book (in the original Klingon titled "Crystal Crisis") served as a warning at the time (mid-80s) that Germany is not focusing on semiconductors enough. He held up Japan as a role model, which is ironic, because outside of DRAM, the Japanese did not succeed much in advanced integrated circuits. Smith's book covers that nicely.

@samyalkenawi @zleap Here's a great book to put this into a historical but also current perspective:
