Dear scientists and science communicators: Please avoid hype. Although it might attract brief attention and clicks, it slowly erodes the badly needed trust in science by the general public.

Covid misinformation, climate change denial, etc, that's the result.

Cool, the money raised can go towards paying unpaid rent in London that Twitter is now being sued for.

@futurebird

It depends on the situation, however I did get a call yesterday from an agency, I was out, so they left a message on the answer phone, problem is I find it really hard to write phone numbers down like this.

If they had e-mailed me too or instead I get back to people much quicker and can say I will be in on X day at between y an z time if you want to call.

@futurebird @ellotheth @veronica

Yeah one example is

Six of one, half a dozen of another, a dozen is 12 there fore 1/2 a dozen is six so 50/50. However unless you know that you're stuck

As for swings and roundabout, people are talking nonsense.

People are usually too embarrassed to ask what things mean, so just say yeah whatever and carryon.

While we should not speculate as to the reasons, perhaps back in the 80s people who were LGBTQ were around just not in the public eye as much. We then had the George Floyd murder and from that black lives matter, from this was an awakening that minority groups had numbers, those numbers had a voice and the groups that seek to abuse those communities see it as a threat as people question their retoric.

Add to all this the rise of the fedi, where those who are marginalised can feel safe, connected and are able to coordiate efforts with others.

For the bigots, the days when they could simply abuse people are fading as people are fighting back hard.

Wow. RStudio (recently rebranded as Posit) is partnering with Palantir. Yes, the same Palantir with ties to Cambridge Analytica. The same Palantir that partners with and actively supports ICE and other oppressive surveillance.

This is really not ok ethically, and can only mean a bad direction functionally for the company's software going forward. I never use RStudio for research myself, but it looks like I'll stop using it in teaching.

Here’s a challenging question — What’s a REALLY SMART PUBLIC POLICY DECISION OR PROGRAM you’ve seen a city make, that actually resulted in a more livable, equitable, healthy and/or sustainable city for people? Share enough details for everyone to understand your choice. Repost if you can, to spread the question to more folks. Thanks!

BREAKING: Senior FBI official who led 2016 investigation finding no link between Trump and Russia, Charles McGonigal, has now been arrested for taking and laundering money for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

The Kremlin infiltration of America goes VERY deep.

This is just crazy, people NEED downtime and time to reflect on other things, time to be wiht family, socialise.

“Working 60–70 hours a week is normalized and expected; if you don’t do it then you’re not a good researcher,” wrote one participant in the free-text section of the survey. “I’ve seen this pressure destroy PhD students and ECR peers, who work themselves to the bone without any end in sight.”

It seems to me that bullying is on the increase at all sort of levels, if it ism't challenged robustly (and don't give me the excuse that doing this is also bullying) then it will just carry on as the behaviour is considered normal and acceptable.

We need to teach people how to communicate and talk to each other in a way that is respectful, this really does start as a young child.

I am doing a few anti bullying courses,understanding everyone is of value and can be included is one way, it needs those at the top, schools, business large / small, or otehr instituitons to accept it is happaning and ensure the culture is one that is inclusive.

@ellotheth @veronica @futurebird

We have that term here, for a person who can't sit still, however that has not been used for a long long time. Common in the 80s I think.

Not very autistic friendly as they will interpret it literally, we are meant to avoid idioms, like that, so raining cats and dogs is also out, as it suggests just that.

This looks really cool, we need more opportunities like this to come together and share, We need stuff like this in Devon and nothing much really seems to happen here.
