But can't we just block servers / people who are on there, we should, from the start distrust them, and anyone using their services that are activity pub enabled.
@lightweight @smallcircles @atomicpoet
I agree, you only need to look at the toxic culture on twitter alone, what Musk is doing to his employees and others, and the fact that corporate america invest in this further as an illustration their values, morals and ethics belong in the sewer.
@smallcircles seems to me that the way to make Free Software sustainable is to make proprietary software unacceptable. I think that's a relatively easy thing to do, because proprietary software sucks. I've explained it at some length: https://davelane.nz/proprietary @atomicpoet
I agree, I think the issue is we are mostly individuals or in small groups, so there is a huge decentralised entity behind free software, it is not seen has huge. I also find a lot of apathy, especially in Devon / Cornwall UK too.
LibrePlanet is next week, an opportunity to get together with other free software advocates and discuss, learn and communicae.
We can't let corporate take over the fediverse, to counter that we just do what we are doing, create content, have conversations and make it clear we have a different culture, we feel safe to discuss what is going on with the #Trans community and show solidarity with them.
Over time we will be stronger.
Main stream social media has it's influencers, we don't have that here, but we do have, for example the science community posting interesting content, or sharing news stories. I would rather read about some complex new discovery than be expected to try and keep up with the antics of some celebrity of influencer who with social media will be no one. A lot of kids want to be influencers, as they see it as easy money, the reality is the opposite, if the social media bubble bursts, then that whole ecosystem could burst with it.
Fantastic work, Megan is an inspirational athelete, lets hope that this really does raise awareness of what is going on, not just in the US but other countries too If it makes people search 'trans and usa' and that comes up with a few stories, it will help. In the meantime I will keep boosting about what is going on.
Deadline for our Research Fund applications is March 30th. Details in the thread 👇 https://t.co/DnEheGoOO1
@atomicpoet I wouldn't say I am worried. This was bound to happen one day.
But I am disappointed that in all the years before the grassroots #FOSS movement wasn't able to create stronger foundations that would place them in a better position than they are now.
It is a fact of life, I know. #FreeSoftware has a big sustainability issue that is very hard to tackle.
If #Fediverse is taken over by the corporate world, FOSS projects are left to add to that or explore new areas to be captured later.
This is a "holy shit" story with an emphasis on the holy: https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/03/09/catholics-gay-priests-grindr-data-bishops/
To out priests using Grindr, a conservative group spent "millions of dollars" on mobile app tracking data.
This whole saga has been one of the most illuminating case studies in the privacy harms that can come from "aggregated" and "de-identified" data being freely sold in the marketplace.
I think the biggest adjustment people who're deeply invested in the proprietary software world experience when moving into the Fediverse is that people here confront them and their underlying assumptions. And that's entirely as it should be. Because this is the parallel universe that #FOSS built. This place exists without need for the rationalisations and expedience that allows otherwise good people to divide & the subjugate the world primarily for their benefit.
😮
Wait. People are saying Meta's decentralized app will be powered by #ActivityPub, and will interoperate with Mastodon.
On top of it, it will be Instagram-branded.
Surprising. But again, I'll believe it when I see it.
Mozilla's official server, mozilla.social, is finally up and running!
Take a look at the first post!
And say "Hello!" to @morethan.
@abishek_muthian @mastodonindians
Indeed, at least we know what to expect with them, more of the same, unless we give them the 'benefit of the doubt' if they just do more of the same we can en-masse block them in a pre-emtive strike as we can share information to help others do the same.
We knew it was only a matter of time before Grimes' ex husband booted us off his platform like a failed SpaceX satellite.
The time for relying on corporate social media platforms has been over for a long time now.
We're stoked at the growth of community here on mastodon and we hope to use this platform to share anarchist, anticapitalist and anticolonial videos for years to come.
Here's Cory Doctorow commenting on Chris Mouré's research into the Google-Microsoft patent wars.
"The point of the patent wars wasn’t to guarantee their own profits – it was to deny the other company its profits. It’s “strategic sabotage.”"
Why do I believe Facebook and Instagram are dying?
Because searches for "deactivate Instagram" and "deactivate Facebook" have been surging. Specifically, here's how much these keyword searches have been rising:
* 2,400% increase for "deactivate Instagram"
* 1,566% increase for "deactivate Facebook"
If they're is so alive and well, why are so many people eager to leave Instagram and Facebook?
I have had my fedi id in my signature for a while now, people don't get it, but as it is also on my business cards, does create a talking point.
Hopefully slowly we can get more people here to create content.
I am at a STEM group meeting saturday, so hopefully will get to make some videos on chemistry experiments with some help from another volunteer who is helping this session.
so any videos (if good enough) will go on to peertube
Twitter's ongoing death spiral is incredibly dramatic.
But Instagram and Facebook's slow descent into death is just as important to understand.
As much as Twitter is Big Social, Meta is even more so.
This is why it's so important to continue building Fediverse services like @pixelfed and Friendica -- they are alternatives to Instagram and Facebook.
Saying sorry is simply not good enough, Musk keeps mocking people, keeps abusing people and will keep sacking people, and treating others below him as if they are not worth anything. He will keep doing this until he is put firmly in is place.
Time for the lawyers and others to stop circling and go in for the KILL.
I don't mean kill him in the literal sense, if the lawyers help victims launch massive lawsuits, his asset balance will end up as 0 or negative,
