#science #academics yeah ok, four grants in four months is too many. My brain is fat, from spending the last 10 years without going at this pace! 😂 But to be fair, they are all great ideas!! I work with awesome collaborators, have I mentioned that? 😁 And we have more in the works, mwa hahha...
Thinking is cool. I'll be sorry if/when I have to stop. 🤓
Hot take, fediverse going mainstream meta
I am not an admin or mod, but fully agree here, I have no problem with a small or medium size business being on here, promoting what they do. If I want updates I just need their id / hashtag so I can follow, the caveat to that is if I reply to a post on a product and ask a question I expect an answer, because fedi is two way.
But as for datascraping, etc that you mentioned it is certainly NOT welcome and yes, we need mitigations in place ASAP to stop it.
We also need to ensure that the whole fedi is covered by these mitigations, what will stop advertiers using peertube for example.
Hot take, fediverse going mainstream meta
Within the next 18 months we're going to see an explosion of invasive #tracking and #datascraping as major advertisers and #dataanalytics companies realize just how fucked Twitter is and start looking for new hunting grounds.
We, as #MastoAdmin and #mastoMods MUST have tools to easily lock out, allow list, and control who can have access to our users that are expecting us to protect their peace and privacy. We're going to see #spam ads from pop up domains in larger numbers, we're going to see garbage coming into our DMs like it used to on Twitter.
The reason these things weren't a larger issue on Twitter (until recently) was because of the infrastructure that went into managing and subduing that sort of behavior. The fediverse has none of that infrastructure, or really even tools.
If you do #MastoDev, please, we need to tools. Perfect is the enemy of done. We #mastoadmin need ways to share reports about problematic users and servers quickly and with notes and standardized categories. We need ways to identify and share with our peers and friends the things we are seeing and actions we are taking, and we need room for nuance and options in our response to unknown unknowns.
It's a big ask, but there's decades of these kinds of tools being built for email and other distributed systems, we don't have to start from nothing!

Ah, thanks
SO it was AGPL, it looks like a 4, hence asking as 4GPL would not quite make sense.

@dfoffreedom
Typical BBC, if people don't agree with something they can ignore it or not watch the programme,
This is a science program, if science says UK wildlife is declining then there is evidence to support it.
If you want to argue an alternative narrative, fine, you are welcome to present that along with your own research based evidence surely.
Standards are truly declining in the UK.
Shocking

This is heinous. The BBC is censoring not only itself, but David Attenborough, by pulling an episode of its new flagship series on British wildlife as it focuses on UK wildlife declines... in case it upsets right-wing politicans and media. #WildIsles

That will put pressure on the UK government to do the same in England,
I think there could be a LOT of kids having days off soon.

@zleap @clowncollege I try to spread the word. One would think the Fediverse would be a huge appeal to the DIY ethic. We just have to keep pestering our own networks.
Can we get more bands on here, and on peertube? So they can share their work, and build up support that way, we can link from here to sites like librepay for example.?
Issues which concern me and the UK feminists I know. Domestic violence and murders. Stalking. Police failures to believe/prosecute sexual assault. Doctors who ignore women's pain /symptoms. Sexism in the media. DWP failures to secure child maintenance for single mothers. Lack of legal aid for divorce. Costs of childcare. The gender pay gap. The glass ceiling. Pension inequality and poverty for retired women. Lots more.
Issues where we're fine. Trans rights, and respect for trans people.
We have got to build a better and fairer society. What we have so far is just failing, I don't have answers, I just hope that somehow fediverse can help.
Hence I would support people of any gender / race etc to post what they do, if they own a small business then lets find a way to allow them to thrive on here, if you work in science and post opportunities, or want to study science and take up those opportunities lets see if we can find a way to facilitate that.
The posting of photos here is a good example of how communities can bring people together.
As I said I don't have the answers, but I am confident we can sideline mainstream and be successful here.
As for the DWP, they are a bunch of ******'*. please replace the *'s with what ever you want.
Lets build something better, I want equality as it brings in a diverse way of doing things, different viewpoints and angles on problems, having women break through that glass celing so the top is more representitive is a good thing

I wish there was a way to pay musicians directly for music and bypass the corporate owners. So the actual artist / band, but also the people in the studio such as the recording technicians so in the case of say the Beatles, this would be rewarding them, George Martin, and the people directy involved in producing the music, oh and the people pressing the disks / media.
Yeah, I was just suggesting another narrative and way to look at this, (after all when things go wrong they will say the same, it is a tool, we can't control how people (ab)use it.
We are now getting the same thing with the Metaverse, they are starting to run more adverts this as a 'greast place' to hold meetings, and learn, all polished etc.
The reality seems far from that given even early on, there were people being assaulted (even sexually).
The coporate entities behind this are very good at just saying positive things, and virtually ignoring the negative use of thse tools, and hence don't want to take some responsibility and deal with the negative side of the technology.
I just shared the article about mental health in young people, the metaverse is aimed at them as they are abandoning facebook etc, so we are storing up problems.
No technology will replace the outside world and breathing in fresh air.
