The funniest/saddest thing about tech bosses fighting unions so hard is that many of the very same things they complain non-stop about their employees would vanish with a healthy and strong union.

Worries about employees hopping from company to company? Offer them a pension and unions have perks and promotions based on seniority, people won't be leaving.

Struggling with DEI initiatives? Giving the Union rep a seat at the table means that you'll be rid of toxic managers and keep your most valuable diverse employees.

Struggling with recruiting talent? A clear union contract showing what the company will give in exchange for what expectations, you'll have a whole class of people who want stability over chasing the highest paycheck beating a path to your doorstep.

Activist shareholders bullying you about needing to do layoffs even when you know it's not going to actually benefit the company? Tell the investors "Sorry, but we can't do layoffs without risking Labor action." The Activist investors will go away and you'll get more investors who want to hold for the long haul.

Worried about hostile takeovers? Not with a union. Vulture capital will leave your business far alone - Unions are their kryptonite.

But, the legal use of #spyware must be in line with the law and within clearly defined borders!

Time to stop naming them too, people can't look them up, so they just go down in history as a terrorist, grave markers become a go to point for fellow terrorists too,

We finally made it! This is the result of a group of 15 amateur astronomers (which I am part of) who have shared their data in an effort to get as much data on this pair of galaxies as possible. The result is over 400h of exposure time (where over 200 are in narrow band Hydrogen-Alpha).

This allowed us to create the deepest and most detailed image of M81 and M82 probably done by amateur astronomers ever! The red, faint Hydrogen "exploding" outwards from Messier 82 is truly a sight to be seen.

Given what happens on social media, this does not surprise me. While we can't do much about mainstream social media, any leglislation / regulation will impact us too. What we can do on the Fediverse is to look at this, learn and ensure the Fediverse does't decend in to a similar cesspit, granted we are good at that with moderation already. but we are also willing to learn, develop to keep the community civilised

Yes, one thing we are good, we used to be really good at making fun of ourselves, even our own royal family, it is a British thing.

I think what will happen under charles III, is that we will see further shift in focus, more acknowledlgement of involvement in slavery, Charles III has said he wants to learn more, not that he is ignorant of what has happened, but perhaps he wants a proper picture.

If we compensate nations, then so be it, if we can come up with a full education plan, involving all parties, so we educate, that will have a lasting longer term legacy from my view.

I still feel the honors system needs to dump references to the Empire, Lets have MBC member of British Commonwealth, esp given the commonwealth not simply a renaming of Empire, I think there was a lot more to it than that.

There is an episode of Star Trek: voyager, Random thoughts, where Torres is charged with thinking a violent thought.

The way the new law works seems to be if they police THINK you are going to do something they can arrest you.

While this appears to set a dangerous presidence, however the police have been doing that for years, by pulling over BLACK people, due to officers being racist and applying racial profiling.

So I can see the issue getting worse for people not better, all this simply alienates the police from the people, increases mis trust, the MET poice are in enough trouble as it is.

I run a code club on the first and third Saturday, I was at Code Club during the coronation itself. For me that took priority, I am sort of interested in these events, but not to the extent that I drop everything for it.

So people who didn't watch it may be because they had other things to do, or many other reasons.

The media seem to think we want wall to wall coverage of something, it was irritating the other day when politics live covererd the local election results, fine no, issue with that.Except usual bbc1 programming was cancelled for it, The same programme was on bbc news 24, same time, same coverage, so why not just direct people to bbc news 24, or the bbc website etc.

I am not too sure either, but the Linux kernel is scalable so it can run on anything from embedded devices right up to supercomputers.

As a result you take the kernel and customise it so it just has the components needed, so a tablet has say solid state storage, so would be optimised for that you don't need the SATA support for example.

So the Kernel just then acts as a layer between the hardware and the android user interface.

I am probably wrong somewhere, but that is how I understand things. I would guess the Linux kernel for the Raspberry may not have SATA support built in, as there is no SATA hardware, but other single board computers may have that.

One of the web based learning platforms, 'New Skills Academy' uses facebook for students to communicate with each other. I would like to be able to reach out to other students regardless of learning provider on here and see what we can create.

There are a lot of websites that offer learning either free or low cost, so it should be possible to discuss anything, the advantage is if a group of say biochemistry students chat, it would attract people working in the industry, coversations then ramp up a few gears, everyone benefits.

I think what may help too is for those who are here to contact providers who offer basic IT skills and ask if they teach people about the fediverse, if enough of us do that, it may push the request over the threshold where they start looking at doing it. That may solve the issue of a few instances dominating, as part of the training would include discussions of choosing an instance.

Maybe the issue with Linux on the desktop was because for a long time people 'including experts' kept saying year xxxx is the year of the desktop, then it didn't exactly happen.

Maybe the Hype or the expectations generated from that was too much.

As you point out what HAS happened is that Linux has come in to dominate the backend of things, servers, phones, cars, set top boxes etc, and Linux is just the kernel. Where as the front end can be bash, xorg, wayland, KDE, GNOME, Xfce etc.

The fediverse has now matured to the point where it can be used, and is used by anyone. But we don't have the media sharing that year xxxx will be year of the fediverse, so there is nothing to accuse us of making empty predictions. We can just get on with building what we have.
