@vicgrinberg

The problem with resources like books, esp for beginners is different people have different learning styles.

I would recommend going to a local library, and seeing what they have, read the first chapter or flip through the book to see if it matches your style. The right mix of text, pictures, diagrams etc. You can get the book out of the library and if you want it on a long term basis, then you can take down the details and contact a book store.

#astrodon folks, if you were to recommend a book introducing the very basics of astro to someone who has a very different background (say diplomacy), what book would it be?

No maths or physics background beyond school knowledge from years ago.

Boosts welcome.

@aral @zleap I agree, there is nothing to do for the masses that don't want to be "saved".

IMHO the best we can do is make ourselves an alternative here. Twitter/big social is commerce/pop culture the #fediverse is for community and connection. It attracts completely different types of people.

@info_activism

This will create new jobs, but probably more technical jobs, which will then depend on society sorting out inequality, so those jobs go to a diverse range of people.

@aral

Just seen on BBC news that video of the Texas Massacre was shared on Twitter millions of times before being taken down. Big tech can change their social networks as much as they want, they can't change the nature of their user base.

What we have here is far better, what you are building with the small-web is also far better as the people behind each instance care about the wider picture, what happens on one instance has an impact on every other.

@Loukas

I get the impression that facebook and twitter users are more likely to react to a post, where as here we are more likely to think then react

"The rise in climate refugees will be presented to us as "migrants seeking work."

In terms of this and specifically climate change, This will affect everyone. Refugees are probably thought of going from one country to another. We know climate change will impact low lying and coastal areas, so this is going to create migration inland from a countries own people, if media / social media mix those people up with refugees from other countries it could be interesting and a shock to people as to how migrants and refugees are portrayed.

If you live in New Orleans, and this gets flooded how are people going to cope with a huge migration to an inland city, I am not too good at geography in the US so I think Baton Rouge is inland (if not elsewhere)

It will be interesting how a combination of right wing anti immigration retoric could potentially turn on people who are American citizens.

Hopefully content posted here, will come with the right captions and spark science and evidence based discussions.

In addition, the Idaho Legislature continues to introduce and pass bills that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care.'"

@StevenSaus

Maybe they could set up school / class based fediverse instances, and teach kids there is another way to do social media, for the kids who are interested in admin, perhaps they can be encouraged to develop the skills to run their own instances.

I can't speak for the community here, but I am sure if that happened, and people reached out to ask for that help, there are people here who would be able and happy to help.

@StefanThinks

There are people on here who are Autistic, so that could explain what you said in some cases.

My conclusion is that supplying evidence that corrects false factual beliefs, and/or pointing out invalid reasoning, has potential value in helping voters to realign their behavior to match their own values.

In general I think that change is likely to occur not in the Pro-GOP Left accounts that post false information or magical thinking arguments, but in others who may be following them, or following relevant hashtags.
