@reay

Good point, but trump is clever enough to be able to tap in to things like this, and exploit it, and not care about the consequences.

@reay

In 2006 I was in canada on a work / travel visa, one of the things I did learn or at least pick up on was that Canadians are proud of the fact they are not Americans. So while the langage is the same, there are a few differences, currency is still the dollar, quaters,nickles, dimes still mean the samething, sport is similar, both countries crazy about baseball and icehockey (certainly around the time of the stanley cup final)

One thing is the attitude towards guns, something that canadians seemed proud of those differences.

That was 2006, before the explosion in social media use (e.g facebook) which is really starting to become that pivotal moment in history where things started to go horribly wrong.

My thoughts are with Canadians, please don't turn into the USA 2.0, the difference is what makes you a great country.

@reay

Problem with the west is we went through this rediculous phase where everyone 'had' to be a winner, to avoid upsetting people

I think the idea was that kids were protected from losing. Thing is you win and lose things if you win, great, if not in terms of a football game, you get back in to the practice sessions and work on the aspects of the game that didn't work as intended for example.

This same idea is then applied to interviews for jobs or courses, you prepare & research the employer, but may not get the job, if you can get feedback you can work out what you need to work on next time you get an interview..

So you pick yourself up and just start again, rather than deciding to give up and hide under a rock.

Makes me wonder sometimes if any of this plays that small part, if a whole generation were taught you can't lose, then for the party to lose the election it is harder to accept if you have never had to suffer defeat before.

From undertaking the prevent awareness course as part of safeguarding training, it seems that people are radiacalised as part of a grooming process.

They may feel left out of their circle of friends, if this is igored or not picked up, then this person may lose their confidence, self esteem or self worth. If I get things properly the grooming process takes advantage of this state of mind, and in this case the people grooming will make that person feel they belong in their group, then feel valued (after all they can spread the message further), slow process later that once rational person is now perhaps racist.

It is only when this is picked up by words or perhaps some actions that it is reported, hence we need to be aware of even the smallest things that could be part of a wider picture.

Problem is we can't do very much until there is a threat to harm others or they harm them selves.

Money, From with the Beatles ( which was a cover anyway)
Money, Money, Money, Abba

@Sinead_Rousse @shawnwegner

Yes, but the article seems to imply he 'hacked' if the system was set up to allow students to share their screen content then the school is partly to blame, as stated there should be systems in place to give proper control over that process.

if he circumvented the system, then there are usually school policies around that too. I think in this case, he didn't he was let in due to weak security. Like you leaving your car unlocked and it gets stolen for items inside get stolen.

So the fact he shares racist material could be a safeguarding issue but I am not sure how robust child safeguarding is in the US compared to the UK so can't comment.

@VedaDalsette

So within 19 seconds of this video we learn she is a hard core in Christianity and a clearly pretty nasy person.

In the UK we know that most abuse is committed by a person known to a child, so e.g family member, other adult, another child or even a person met on line and the abuse happens after being groomed.

We also know from high profile cases, it is very difficult for people to accept a person who is high profile, I am thinking Jimmy Saville here, is capable of, or is committing abuse, saville committed abuse over a good number of years (may have been decades) if it was reported it was not believed as it was an accusation against a high profile person.

So going back to this story, presenter makes a good point, if her child reported the abuse, yes she would probably panic, and then be in a situation as to who does one defend and believe, husband or child, if you are committed to both (and in a christian household, marriage is an important joining) then it may be hard to make a rational decision. Was she threatned if she didn't do this ( that could be duress) if that is disclosed later, then the police take it in to consideration as to why you retracted a report or in this case appeared to interupt or get a child to retract.

You only have to look at how abuse happens in the church to realise that coverups are common place, reputation is at stake for a start., but also the idea you keep it internal to avoid public scandal.

The facts of the case happened in the home, a jury would be given the facts of the case (so the fact she is anti trans, and thinks the bible is the law, has nothing to do with it so the jury would be instructed accordingly) as a jury member you get told the facts, and need to make a decision purely on those facts, A person may have a history of violent behaviour, that does not mean he should be assumed gulity.

I am not a lawyer so may be wrong on a few items of terminology but this is how I understand things, this will be interesting how it plays out.

If a child was thrown against a wall, or just falls down a set of stairs, then it would be a duty to call 911 in the US to get medical help, make sure there are no hidden injuries.

Both despots running for president have said they would pardon 1/6 insurrectionists; DeSatan went even further, that he would consider pardoning tRump. One is a serial criminal & the other is ruling Florida like a dictator!👎🤨😠😡🤬-ER

@alexapagliuca

+1 I was actually going to mention some of this, but then remembered about fertility rates falling.

Given the state of the world, why would anyone want to raise a child, esp in the US, when the first week at school would probably involve a drill in case there was an active shooter in the building or traumatised if they bring in their favourite book.

On Monday, I wrote an essay about climate and biodiversity for Scientific American. I tracked proportional engagement, calculated as (likes + shares + comments)/followers, over six social media platforms.

The winner? MASTODON, by a landslide.

Second place? INSTAGRAM. It's harder to share posts on IG, but lot of people like things there!

The loser? FACEBOOK, also by a landslide. On Facebook, I've been shadow-banned since August 2018 when they listed clean energy and climate as "socially sensitive topics" so my page there stopped growing 6 years ago and now only about 1% of my followers there ever see my posts. It's actually too bad, because that's the platform where I reach the most conservative audiences through their connections to friends and family. So even though it's dead last, I still persist.

@shawnwegner

This needs to be dealt with so it sends a clear message to the student, but equally sends a clear message the school won't tolerate this.

Tom Baker is trending, hence resharing his biggest Doctor Who memory:

"I remember a man stopping me in Oxford Street once, looking at me with absolute incredulity.. 'You know, when I was a boy, I was in a home for children; nobody wanted us, you know? It was terrible. And you made Saturday night good.' And I went to say something to him and I could see him so close to tears that he couldn't speak. And he shook his head and he just did a.. thumbs up. It's incredible, isn't it? Just a gesture."

@danwentzel@calckey.lgbt
We can't even live together as humans, without one person finding a reason to think they are better than someone else. AI needs a base to build on, if that base is that of its creator, then we are in trouble.

Put kids in charge of it, they seem more accepting and rational in a lot of cases.

@alexapagliuca

Just as Hitler tried to remove anything that got in the way of his idea that the Aryan was a ) a race and b) superior to anyone else.

This is why they’re banning books and censoring educational curriculums that present any challenge to white, Christian identity as the default and normative power.

Physicist and astronaut Sally Ride was born #OTD in 1951. She was the first American woman and the youngest American in space. After NASA she worked on arms control and physics, investigated the Columbia and Challenger disasters, and promoted STEM through Sally Ride Science.
