When your home burns, floods, or is destroyed in an extreme climate weather event, when someone in your family dies from heat waves, or when crops fail and people starve—come for these three people: Wael Sawan (Shell CEO), Darren Woods (Exxon CEO), and Patrick Pouyanne (TotalEnergies CEO). They knew what was coming and did it to you anyway. Sue them, shame them, heckle them, despise them. These are choices. They are to blame, not society.

I know the lead singer is / was Bono, if you mention some of their songs I will recognise them and probably know the lyrics.

Well, on the bright side, Canada should have a surplus of charcoal going forward.

If you were running a restaurant, and they came in and found you did not cater for their diet, they would throw a wobbly and accuse you of discrimination and probably seek legal compensation, Howeever they are doing this exact thing when banks are refusing to offer services to the rest of the normal workfoce who can't get decent loans or mortgages as they look down on you.

@aral
Wow, that sucks.
I used to work for a bank. I had to stop working for them to get a mortgage with them (on not much of an improved salary). When I asked the mortgage advisor, he snorted and said "not on your wage!" When I asked if there were any deals for workers, he just said "none that will benefit you".

Good point,. Good point, I share the concerns that AI could be used to get actors to do something they would not normally do, or even agree to. This is a whole new field of tech, that the laws HAVE to keep up with some how.

"I keep reading that film studios are cometmplating replacing writers and actors by using Artificial Intellegence to mimic their talents. Surely it would be easier and more efficient to replace executives, since they have no talent."

Can we please just create a “necessary cookies only” HTTP header so we don’t have to navigate a dialog every time we visit a site?

May seem trivial but partly what sold Linux to me was the fact that if coping files, if there was filea.txt and filea.txt, rather than just having an option (as you got with DOS) to ignore or overwrite, Linux (well bash) gave me the option to rename.

And who remembers manually configuring the XFree86Config file.

How to use Mastodon:

Step 1: Sign up.

Step 2: Do regular social media stuff.

Journalists: Only those with advanced degrees in computer science should even attempt to navigate Mastodon, the frustrations of its complexities will drive the average user to a state of hysteria.

@pdt

Ah yes,

1 boot disk and 1 root disk, to create using rawrite, then the install floppies, i had to use dos, as that read the cd drive, then rawrite different disk sets to floppies to install,. so sets a1 to a5 for example were applications.

the most 'UNIX-like' Linux, installed from floppies, was my first Linux in the 90s, and it either predisposed me towards BSD or i was drawn to it for the same reasons.

happy 30th, Slackware!

@charliechan

I have an install cd somewhere with kernel 1.0.9 on it, ancient yes but it may be worth something given what an unboxed iPhone from 2006 or 7 just sold for.

Scary shit, man. I’m shook.

Florida ocean temperatures peak to almost 100 degrees amid heatwave: "You really can't cool off"

Having a bar or similar that is not sjowing some major event is probably a good money spinner, here in the UK most places seem to show soccer, this dominates the news even if there are other big events on. It will be interesting to see how many places show the women's soccer world cup, the quality of which is way better than the mens game anyway.

There is just that assumption people are interested, or people assume that one uses facebook, instagram. You see this in the Daily mail, they refer to THAT something or other than apparently people haver gone wild over on social media, usually something very trivial like an item of clothing worn by some celebrity, that they also assume people have even heard of.

One reason I like it here, I can look clueless in real life when people try and say everyone is talking about it, well they are not on here certainly.

UK government has ‘mixed scorecard’ on levelling up admits adviser

@euwatchers

The UK government could not even use a spirit level.

@wausaupilot

Ah the movie yellow submarine, as the single was 1966 as the song was featured on Revolver. It was also released as a single along side Eleanor Rigby.

Biden taxed the untaxed, corporations who avoided responsibility to the society that created and feeds them, raising almost a trillion dollars. Those funds were directed to climate, the largest climate action in history, a good first step. 500 billion in heat pumps and other ways to reduce energy use and cost.

Roosevelt Truman and Eisenhower paid off the WW2 debt, and then built universities and the highway system.

We can do this.
