Well lets hope it does not come to trump regaining the white house, as this 100 million will be the first to moan when certain freedoms are removed.

@aljazeera

This seems to have been forgotton about by main stream news such as the BBC.

The govenment are throwing billions at failed ideas, when we need to target the very people who are taking peoples life savings in some cases to get them to the UK.

Didn't the US open up visa offices in various south american countries to assist with visa applications out side of the US so if approved people had a legal route to enter the country.

I am not too sure, if you were using a product prior to the GDPR becoming law, then once that becomes law, the terms and related policies change and in this case you gain better protection under the new terms.

If I wrote a program under gplv2, then updated it, when you update your software, then then new version would be under v3 of the gpl, you should be made aware of this for example.

What you are proposing could have implications for the above, but you do raise an excellent point in terms of using zoom and their new policy, however you kinda expect that from big tech.

@strypey @slightlyoff @fabrice I think we're veering deeply off topic, but if you expect me to support everyone who works in any field of work in the name of solidarity, hard pass from me. I can absolutely hope people who work to support Donald Trump get fired and struggle to pay rent because of it.

People trying to build the torment nexus at Google can go in the same bucket.

'An Important Step Forward': Deep-Sea Mining Not Approved During International Talks - EcoWatch

Hopefully this subject is nothing anyone in the Fediverse need worry about personally but it's still a very interesting read about what happens to people who make mistakes on social media. Horrible, devastating mistakes.

The author Jon Ronson, is genuinely kind in how he interacts with his subjects. As a result, he gets more honest and candid responses from them.

This paper has comprehensively demonstrated why you don't roll your own anonymization (unless extremely qualified). It's pretty epic:

insidehighered.com/sites/defau

... It also demonstrates that a bunch of
economists will say a lot of hateful things (sexist, racist, homophobic, and antisemetic) if they think they're anonymous. So many people are trying to get this replaced by a moderated alternative.

Paper is worth a read to drop your jaw at the terribleness of either angle. Or both.

@mpesce

Just on a side note here,

Does facial recognition work equally on all faces regardness of skin tone / colour? I remember a report of blood oximiters not working as well on black skin, probably due to the way they work and the need for different calibration for example ( I am not sure)

If there are flaws in the system, they need to be investigated and fixed, as for policing this is surely a TOOL and should not replace actual detective work, it seems we are moving towards people being lazy, and thatis before we factor in the fact that there is serious racism embedded in policing,

@specwill

While I am guilty of doing this, Just giving people the Big Blue Button link is not going to do very much, other than perhaps raise awareness of alternatives (which is more my intention at least)

What we need to do, is find people who can install / maintain this software so that companies etc can find people with the skills host an instance for their company. Or set up companues to host instances.

Even we need to get round the fact they are tied in to zoom as so many people are using it, despite the current changes to the terms and conditions, unless people can find an easy swtich alternative ( I don't mean using teams here) they will just carry on using zoom.

A sort of deadlock I can't see a way out of.

@skye

I am NOT developer so can't help here, what I can do is boost and repeat that we HAVE to get this fixed, work with all different communities to fix any AI / UX issues properly or as best we can.

this, by the way, is what #mastodon looks like at 400% zoom. approximately 30% of the surface is left for the relevant content. do you suppose visually impaired people enjoy scrolling every time they would like to see the next 5 words?

really not looking forward to the time in my life when i’m going to need this because clearly, virtually nobody in interested in fixing this shit

They are dangerous either way, as they seem to be also able to spread this in such a way that others follow this narrative that for example Jan 6 was all a set up and never happened.

Reminds me of Wile-E-Coyote cartoons where he is about to get buried in rocks and just puts up a small cocktail umbrellla as if that is going to protect him, only he still gets buried in rocks.
