Agreed, lots of algae in my local park pond, not sure if it is blue / green (need closer look I guess) but it is worrying, but then this is an artificial pond, so the ducks (mallards mostly) don't seem to mind that much.

I have no words! Since I've been on Mastodon, I can see a huge difference between IG, FB, X and Mastodon. Mastodon rules!!! But in my wildest dreams, I would not have expected such a response as I've been receiving to yesterday's post. I wish I could hug all of you! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for each like and boost. Your help is priceless.

Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it, requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.

Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

This is an important topic no one is talking about very much.

Water required by data centers is increasing considerably with the advent of generative AI. Large language models trained on vast amounts of data need considerable cooling.

While some may argue that water can be reused, it is often pulled from water supplies in times of considerable heatwaves, when residents are in need of it as well, and supplies diminsh faster.

In July of 2022, Microsoft pumped in about 11.5 million gallons of water to its cluster of Iowa data centers, according to the West Des Moines Water Works. That’s around 6% of all the water used in the district, which also supplies drinking water to residents.

Meanwhile, the energy required is of course not recycled – and it’s to be expected that energy use is growing as well. The companies behind the tools are just not disclosing how much their AI investments are costing when it comes to their carbon footprint.

”In its latest environmental report, Microsoft disclosed that its global water consumption spiked 34% from 2021 to 2022 (to nearly 1.7 billion gallons, or more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools), a sharp increase compared to previous years that outside researchers tie to its AI research.”

Interesting, I can think of a few possible examples of where this may be used in some form.

1. The bbc is funded by a licence fee, so they block content in some countries

2. I have seen adverts on TV ( I live in England) for say legal services, within the message at the bottom of the screen it may say something like 'not available in Northern Ireland as I think the laws are different. So said company could block internet users in Northern Ireland from viewing that content.

But yes, this idea is a good one to protect companies from legal action for non GDPR compliance or perhaps other laws.

I don't have a job for the first time in my life and have to ask for help. Each boosting means a lot to me and I hope it will help to find a few persons interested in buying my photographic prints.
Thank you so much for your help!

My daughter ran away from me while we were out today in a beeline towards traffic and I screamed in a way I think everyone present will remember

KISS principle for Software Engineering (or any other stuff in life) is the best. Do you agree?

This was 1984, so why has no subsequent government reversed this ? Dems And Republicans have held government since then,

Canada's Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has voted AGAINST:

Thanks, a complex situation I guess too. Hopefully more updates can be posted as I doubt mainstream media will cover this.
