Thinking about the gender politics surrounding "skilled trades" in the US
(Obviously there are more intersections here but right now I'm just thinking about gender)
The idea of "women in trades" has the same vibes as "women in tech": treating women as outsiders or guests in male-dominated fields, as if women weren't here the entire time. For trades, though, we usually think of "trades" as being the heaviest, toughest, manliest, most "blue-collar" jobs in the market.

…Not once did anyone, including senior leadership, suggest punitive action. Nobody blamed the engineer. Instead, we all focused on how our systems could allow something like this to happen by accident.
Culture is incredibly important in the workplace. This engineer was blaming himself for causing an outage, but the rest of us were blaming ourselves for allowing it to happen. If we acknowledge that humans aren’t perfect, that they’re well-intentioned, we move past blame and towards resiliency… 🧵

The number of PhD opportunities on the fediverse is really amazing, shows that we are starting to become a really serious platform attracting some very talented and qualified individuals.
I don't see this sort of thing posted to Twitter, or LinkedIn, I am not on Facebook, Instagram so can't comment on those platforms. But it is really encouraging, esp with all the other intellectual content on here too.

This is wonderful. Having options for people with a variety of hairstyles makes activities like biking, skating, etc. more accessible.
