That's three billionths of a Kelvin above absolute zero for a Schwarzschild black hole twenty times as massive as our Sun.

The results for a rotating black hole (as far as we can tell, all astrophysical black holes have some amount of rotation) look a bit more complicated, but aren't quantitatively that different.

NASA Style Guide for reference:

“Gender-Specific Language (e.g., Manned Space Program vs. Human Space Program)

In general, all references to the space program should be non-gender-specific (e.g., human, piloted, unpiloted, robotic, as opposed to manned or unmanned).”

Every few months, I find myself recommending basically everyone read this one article about the protactile deafblind language. But particularly relevant to mastodon users (AND people working on automated image captioning) is its great discussion of what makes good alt text.

Don't add excess detail! It may make you look like a True Ally, but you're not helping blind people. https://audio.mcsweeneys.net/transcripts/against_access.html

#HappyBirthday to the late cosmologist Stephen Hawking. Changing our view of the universe with his theories and outreach, Hawking was also an avid advocate for continued space exploration.

@zleap People really need to move past the immediate urge to "exploit" things.

8 January 1943 | Hungarian Jewish girl Lea Sherman was born in Nagyvárad (Oradea).

In June 1944 she was deported to Auschwitz, where she was murdered in a gas chamber after selection.

I may have set a short story in an opal mining town on Mars for exactly this reason.

A stunning album of 355 of the original prints by the man who came to be known as 'Snowflake Bentley' was bought by London’s Natural History Museum in 1899, and the collection has now been digitised and made available to view online - Guardian

In 1952, Katherine Johnson heard there were open positions at the all-Black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (later NASA) Langley laboratory.

With far too many accomplishments to list, her work was fundamental to marking a turning point in the space race with the Soviet Union. https://www.nasa.gov/content/katherine-johnson-biography

In 2015, President Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She passed away in 2020 at 101. #women #history #space

95% of Earth's opals come from Australia's Red Centre. After the Eromanga sea disappeared a few million years ago, it left vast tracts of Australian soil stained red by iron oxide, and the geologically rapid drying also formed an abundance of opals.

The surface of Mars went through a very similar process when the planet lost its oceans. So the Red Centre of Australia is very Mars-like, and there may be opals hiding under the Martian surface!

PM claimed “I‘ll deliver what I promise”. So why, *1 year* since ACRS scheme set up to resettle Afghans, have *none* been evacuated from Afghanistan? Instead they face torture & death. Their betrayal by ministers is beyond shameful

I still see posts with people wanting no politics. So I will leave a reminder:

1. Politics = how we make decisions about living together in society.

2. Not participating in politics = endorsing the status quo.

3. Refusing to participate in politics is a privilege. It is also a decision to abandon those in a more vulnerable position.

You might want to abstain and that's fine.
But someone has to combat injustice, racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBTQ hate.
